DVLA & Registration

Hi Folks,
DVA & Registration (Or should it be Frustration!)
Wanted to register my car today after a long wait so on copmpleting my V55 & Built Up Inspection report telephoned my local office (Dundee) using the phone number in the V355 booklet (Guidance Notes For Completion Of V55 Forms) to book an appointment, only to find out that the number listed does not accept incoming calls! So I then looked up the number in the local Phone Book and dialled it only to be greeted by some lad with a Welsh accent, who informed me that I was now speaking to Swansea, and I cannot contact my local office directly but if I wanted he would fax Dundee and get them to call me within the next two hours! As this was the only option I reluctantly agreed.
After about an hour & a half the phone rung and I was greeted by a pleasant sounding woman who informed me that I would have to come in with the relavent forms and an appointment would be made for me. So getting all the paperwork, recceipts, donor vehicle V5, MAC Certificate, insurance cert. etc. I high tailed it to Dundee thinking that this is finally it, after 18 months of hard graft, sleepless nights and much problem solving I was finally at the end of the tunnel! How wrong I was! After checking all the paperwork which was Ok, and the relavent donor parts were noted I was told that as I am looking for an age related plate I would need to have the car inspected. (This I knew from an earlier visit to collect the appropriate forms and had been told the waiting time was at most two days.)
Thinking I would have my car inspected and a registration allocated in the next few days, I started dreaming of long sunny drives through the Highlands and Glens this weekend! :drive: Wrong! I have now been informed that the only person capable of inspecting the car is "On leave" at least until next week and may be off for a further week! By which time my temp cover note will have expired & Flux have advised me they can't extend the cover without a registration number!
Oh well I've waited this long, another week won't make much difference, will it?
Clive.

Re: DVLA & Registration

Hope it all gets sorted out soon... all sounds extremely frustrating!

I have to say, it does seem odd that you have to have the car inspected again, when you already have the SVA test. Why can't they just note the donor parts as part of that inspection? Is this the system everywhere or is it just the scots being bloody minded?

Dave,

I only hope they don't change the system too much... It seems that the only way for Jon and I to get an age related plate for our Dax is to get 'someone' to put a 351W in an XJ40 and then transfer it to us as a donor car, in order that the Dax has 2 major component parts being used. This seems like chaos, and is presumably the reason why all your builds use 100% new major component parts.

How would a DVLA inspector have a clue whether or not the engine was taken from an XJ40, save for the fact that on the face of it it's pretty un likely!!

Simon

Hi Simon.
Do you not have:-
front axle components from an XJ40 (Stub axles, hubs etc)
Rear axle components from an XJ40 (Hubs and driveshafts)
Some steering components..... XJ40 (Steering arms)
transmission ............................XJ40 (Diff)
And if you don't tell them I won't.......Gearbox! ;o)

.....Plenty to be going on with there.

Re: DVLA & Registration

Clive,

I had the same sort of problems. I was able to book the inspection in for the next day with another local office, and the inspection took less than 5 minutes.

The really anoying thing was the inspector was in the first office but couldn't sqeeze me in for the inspection, so I had to take the car out my way the next day for the 5 minute inspection!

Hi Paul,
The problem seems to be that I would have to take all my paperwork to the next nearest DVLA office (Edinburgh, Glasgow or Aberdeen) having first picked it up from Dundee where they kept it all, and present the paperwork there. Assuming they can inspect my car I would have to make an appointment and return at a later date to have my car inspected, a journey of at least 200 miles for a 5 minute test! My point is if I could phone these offices to book a test everything would be a lot easier. (For me anyway!)
Cheers, Clive.
