JCB gets landspeed record

The British JCB Dieselmax team has broken the land speed record for diesel powered vehicles, averaging a speed of 328.767 miles per hour.
The car, driven by Wing Commander Andy Green, broke the record on the Bonneville Salt Flats in Utah after making two runs.
The first run was made at an average speed of 324.248mph with the return run averaging 333.339mph, beating the previous record of 235mph which has stood for more than 30 years.

In 1997, Green became the fastest man in the world when he drove ThrustSSC through the sound barrier to a speed of 763.035mph.

The JCB Dieselmax he drove was designed by a British team and is powered by a version of the same engine that is used in ordinary JCB vehicles.

"To have built the world's fastest diesel is a stunning achievement for the JCB Dieselmax team and the car performed superbly," said Dr Tim Leverton, project director.

Sir Anthony Bamford, chairman of JCB, said: "This is a marvellous achievement for JCB, and a wonderful tribute to British engineering."

Wing Commander Green said: "What a fantastic day for this team, who deserve all this credit.
"It is a fantastic day for British engineering and for JCB, who have shown a lot of courage with this project.
"The car was going incredibly quickly. I actually backed off going into the measured mile, and probably did a bit too much."

Re: JCB gets landspeed record

Awsome. although inmy opinion its kind of a hollow victory. I dont see the point in a diesel record. Thrust didnt claim it as the fastest ever <what ever powers it> powered car.....

Although i know that guy that did alot of the promo shots and he said its pretty cool.

Re: JCB gets landspeed record

Don't know about landspeed records but it would be nice if JCB could build a digger that could keep up with the normal flow of traffic !

With a 750HP motor perhaps they will in future :thumb:

Good luck to 'em for giving it a shot - I wonder if Audi will give it a try?

The stuff they run jet engines on is called AVTUR or as us in Britain normally know it "JET-A1". The Thrust car was powered by a couple of Rolls Royce Spey aero engines, hmmmm

Know I can't say for real incase the man at the inland revenue is listening but a diesel car runs quite adequately on this fuel! It smells better as well!

During that fuel crisis a few years ago I can assure you that most people in the aviation industry were running their diesel cars on JET-A1.

So as the fuels are so closely linked is this not a false victory by JCB? Not one to Poo Poo British engineering of course! I think it should be a victory for a diesel engine but maybe not diesel fuel!

Then again who cares, well done boys!!!!
