Another wheel option...

http://www.cobraclub.com/crcforum/user_files/1128.jpg

I have compiled a picture of the most common wheels found on the original Cobras. They are:

1. Wire wheels
2. Halibrand “Kidney Beans”
3. Halibrand “GT40”
4. Halibrand “Sunburst”

Wire wheels are of minor interest since most build 427 replicas and they where only found on 289 Roadsters.

“GT40” seems to be the most common one and it looks like Image Wheels GTD5 is the most common substitute (even though I don’t find them that true to the original). Other brands that offer nice replicas of the “GT40” is Compomotive, Team III Wheels, PS Engineering, Trigo to mention a few.

“Sunburst” was common on 427 Roadsters but is rare on replicas since there seems to be no replica wheels of this model.

“Kidney Beans” has been as uncommon as the “Sunburst” for the same reason. It therefore came as a nice surprise to me when I checked American Racings website and discovered that they are now offering replicas of this wheel named “Salt Flat”. There is Cobra style spinners as an optional accessory to these wheels.

Hi Paul,

I wish I knew! I have a really hard time trying to make up my mind. I was initially planning to use American Racing Torq-Thrust but I am changing my mind all the time. Salt Flat is a nice alternative. Not so common but still genuine. I will postpone my decision another year or so...

RE: Another wheel option...

Well, everyone to there own I guess - but I'm not over keen on those kidney ones either. If you want to fit something other than Halibrand reps there's plenty of good looking wheels out there which might suit a cobra. My personal choice would be for something like Image billet 5 spokes.
