HELP! - When is a Getrag not a Getrag??

Dear All

Bought a 'Getrag' gearbox couple of months ago as feedback on the forum indicated this to be a good way to go as I'm not planning obscene power.

Getrag offered on forum so travelled to the seller, I bought it and brought it home. After buying all the clutch assembly I ordered the AK conversion kit which arrived this week. Immediately apparent that the conversion plate would not mate with the gearbox. So I sent AK a picture of the gearbox, response was the gearbox was not a Getrag but probably off a Rover of Sherpa van. Not happy.

Maybe I should have checked to see what a getrag looked like before I bought it.

So then:-
1. The seller may not have known that the box was not a Getrag when offered for sale (but PMed for his response) so I am not accusing anyone of anything yet (but I would have helped to make sure before advertising it as a getrag?!)
2. I need to now source a replacement gearbox. Can't anyone offer any help please!!! Must be some of you who have switched from a Getrag to tremec?

It's number 2 that I would really do with some help on at the moment.

All the best

John

It would help with getting offers if you filled in your user ID details so that people could get a rough idea where you are at a glance.

Re: HELP! - When is a Getrag not a Getrag??

Sorry !

I'm based in H. Wycombe so W. London to Birmingham is good (M40). Also go down to Dorset fairly often so M3/303 are also well trodden.

Regards

John

They come up pretty regularly on e-bay. Make sure you get one with detachable bell housing as many of the BMW ones and some Jaguar I believe come with an integral housing which is no good. Don't by the first one you see as often they are on buy-it now for 5-600 notes, wait a while and you should find one for less than £250.

Re: HELP! - When is a Getrag not a Getrag??

If you get one for £250 you will do well, I looked for ages and then got one for £300 out of a low mileage XJS, I saw the car. No matter it was still sh*gged.

Of course this didn't show until I had put 500 miles worth of stick through it....no doubt others will have had better experiences but I saw the internals during rebuild and it wasn't pretty. I used a company that do a lot of upgrade work for the Nitrous Supra brigade so it should now stand upwards of 400 BHP/400lbft torque but that cost £600. I suppose I am saying think twice, in all the box has cost £900 + all the running around + the new clutch during rebuild edging the price toward £1100/£1200. Repower do a complete Tremec kit including clutch for around £1800 or you could even consider import.

So much of any build can involve spending money twice....The car is still off the damn road and I am still waiting for new parts to arrive, flywheel & bellhousing, another thing I should have replaced during the build....better stop, I'm going of on one......For Sale AK Cobr................

Re: HELP! - When is a Getrag not a Getrag??

Thanks all for the responses

The 'paying twice' is definately a common theme for me !

I have bought everything else (clutch componants and AK conversion kit) so I'll go along with the getrag route. AK have responded that they can supply a getrag for £450 which is what I'll probably do as I know it should be OK and mate with their kit, is this reasonable? Concerned that if I get one of eBay i'll get a knackered one (once burnt and all that......)

On a slightly different note, I have corresponded with the CRC member who sold me the original box and he was pretty supprised as he was certain it was a getrag so I think an honest mistake on his part (he feels pretty bad about it). He has offered to compensate but I feel a little bad if he is out of pocket too.

I know he is a regular visiter to the forum so is probably reading this too so I would be interested in what people feel would be a reasonable compensation (I paid £250). I think this would be a fair way to do it.

All the best

Re: HELP! - When is a Getrag not a Getrag??

Definately a Rover box (lt77 by looks of it ).

With all due respect to the member who sold you the box I`d personally expect the £250 back as it`s not what it was suposed to be. . Maybe 75% as a compromise if you feel generous .

As for buying from AK I would say you`d be ok. and at current rates £450 is not too bad , I paid £400 for mine over a year ago (not from AK mind). If you do find one for £250 your very lucky. At least with AK you should get some help if it goes t*ts upwards :thumb: .
