Ram header/expansion tank quicky

I have recently ordered a Ram spec header/expansion tank with filler cap

There are two outlets (excluding the cap neck overflow), one is a bleed connection to top of radiator RHS, the other is to be tapped into the main tube from thermostat to top LHS of rad and is for filling.

Thing is they are just 3/8 which is fine for the bleed connection but seems seriously slow for filling. I would expect to disconnect hose from stat and fill there. Also, it is a pain to route and plumb the filling 3/8 hose so I want to leave it out.

So question is: is there any disadvantage to speccing the tank with just a bleed connection to rad? I hope this would handle any expansion and contraction of coolant and would probably be OK to occasionally top up coolant. It would also provide the path into the pressure of the system to allow the cap to function. So is there any advantage with 2 outlets?

Sorry if this is a stupid question!

Re: Ram header/expansion tank quicky

Try this, its of the tank installation in my old car, the tank I binned but the shinybitz one you have ordered is exactly the same.
The small pipes dont matter, you dont need flow for filling as you dont fill through the header tank it should not be used as a filler! You should have aplain cap at the highest point in the system ideally (you can get away with not, but why when its so easy to do properly?)
The feed into the plain cap should be at the highest point hence why the system filler cap is there, and the pressure cap should be on the expansion tank.
This worked fine on my car for 12 tyears and is std Ram issue plumbing with an SD1 rad.
If you only have the bleed connection to the rad, the header wont always top up any water losses in the system by thermo syphon, if say you get an air lock; with it connected into the highest point of the sytem too, it vents and fills easily; why re design something that works?

Re: Ram header/expansion tank quicky

Cheers Steve some fair points.
What I'm planning is the same but initially blanking off the second bleed pipe to the top, only because of cost, that said I now have a bit of -10 braided left over so if I can get Roger in time and increase the size of the outlet I'll use it (onto a spur welded into the very nice chromed toilet down pipe I have which fits perfectly! Just keep that to yourself or I'll never live it down)!
It will be the same as your photo bar the plain cap, I'll undo the jubilee clip initially.:boohoo:

Could all members please stop selling perfect cars for less than mine is costing to build with bits of toilet!!.

OK, I still dont understand why you feel you need to increase the header tank outlet pipe size though; flow is totally ireelevant, and the standard size is perfect.

Oh, I think its a given that these cars cost more to build than theyre worth

I know of a GD that employs a Toilet Soil Pipe Connector in the Inlet Tract

Re: Ram header/expansion tank quicky

The one and only reason is I have 15 ft of aeroquip -10 braided hose! A larger spur costs the same as a 3/8 one! Result: free pretty hose which does the same job.:drive:
