to paint or not to paint

Our Sumo is pretty much finished and we've sent off for the SVA test. We had planned to have it painted immediately after the SVA, however I've heard that it's best to let the body settle before painting it, by driving it for a few months in gel coat. We're also not too keen on having it freshly painted in preparation for below freezing winter temperatures. I was just wondering what your opinions about painting it were? Has any waited then painted it?

Thanks,

John

John.
If your painter is switched on to fibreglass he will bake it as part of the process so settlement shouldn't come into it. However you might want to make some changes once it has been on the road for a while, So an unpainted body might be an advantage.

Re: to paint or not to paint

I left my Dax for about a year in the grey gelcoat.

I had to enlarge the side pipe holes in the body as they touched under acceleration and I decided to move the fuel filler cap from the top of the rear deck into the top of the wing.

I was glad I left it a while before painting!

Craig.
