Keeping the SVA Inspector happy

When you go to Bristol, this is almost Mission Impossible!

Anyway, the last item that I have on my list of things to be addressed is the top edge of the windscreen. I know that the screen I have is sold as being SVA compliant with regard to edges, sides and so on, but this hasn't stopped the inspector from being unhappy about it and so he has put it to me that I need to do something about it.

I fear that arguing with him will get me nowhere fast.

A thought I had to get around this was to look for some trim that would fit inside the top of the screen, but this would require to be fixed (ie. glued) into position. Glueing anything into this small channel may prove difficult or awkward to remove afterwards as I do wish to fit a hood later this year.

I have seen some trim on the Woolies web site, but nothing suitable. Part of the problem I see is that in the centre of the screen the gap goes wider, obviously to accomodate the hood frames that are inserted.

Another alternative, and probably the one I favour, would be to get hold of some clear tube and split it on one side so that it can open up. Then fix (ie. glue) this to the top front edge of the windscreen using some sort of contact glue. If I do this, would the glue be removable and/or would it damage the frame in any way?

Failing that, does anyone else have any good ideas? If I can get this sorted this week, then I stand a chance of getting the car back to Bristol next week.

Thanks,
Tony B

Hi Tony I think the split clear tube option sounds like a winner.
Checkout your local garden or aquatics centre, they will have it in various diameters.
How old is your screen surround? I thought all of the ones supplied by Autobrass and Brasscraft were SVA friendly these days.
Mine passed with no issues last September down the road here in Cardiff.

RE: Keeping the SVA Inspector happy

I only bought the screen late last year from Brasscraft and have since spoken to them about this. They have never heard any problems with their screens either and yet I still think it would take some considerable convincing for this guy to pass the screen, hence the search for an easy alternative.

RE: Keeping the SVA Inspector happy

Hi Tony, mine failed at Bristol for the same reason. I have now bought some chrome trim at the stafford show, I think it is chrome windscreen rubber insert, with a T section. I have glued this into the channel with silicon, so it should come out. Looks good too. Mine also failed on the dashboard lower radius, standard Pilgrim fiberglass dash covered with foam and leathcloth, exactly 19mm. radius, but failed without even measuring it. Have also fitted the sierra brake bias valve as the rear brakes locked before the front. Will have to wait until April now for the retest as cannot get time off from work.
Best of luck
brian

Brian,

Do you know the name of the company you bought it from, and possibly a part number?

Don't suppose you'd have any spare?

RE: Keeping the SVA Inspector happy

Tony,

An easy and ridiculous solution would be to remove the windscreen alltogether, No windscreen, no inside edge, no problem }(

Using a contact glue could be a tad tricky to remove afterwards even from the shiny chrome surface, A selant would probably be better as it should pull off in a single lump. Another solution is to use a polyester foam that you can buy in tubes (CFS sells the stuff)

Mask the glass and surrounding frame as you don't want this stuff anywhere near where you don't want it!!

squirt the stuff in to the void

Wait for it to dry

Cut off excess foam

It won'r look pretty but is should stop the Bristol B*****d complaining.

When your ready to remove simply use Acetone as this will Melt the foam in to a uckky liquid that can be washed away.

Very mucky, very ugly but it's an alternative

Tony

What ever you decide to glue in the channel, use clear silicone, it will come off easy, I used silicone when I glued the rubber edging on the side vents, just rubbed off with my finger.

DO NOT USE EXPANDING FOAM, its sticks like shit to a blanket.

RE: Keeping the SVA Inspector happy

Hi guys

Mine failed at Leighton Buzzard last August with a Brass Craft screen, but only on the centre cutout in the channel, as the edges of this part is not radiused. My solution was to mould a rubber insert and glue this in with clear adhesive.

I was also failed on not having small radiuses around the escution plates at the bottom of the windscreen pillers and around the stone guards on the rear arches. I know 2 GD's that passed at the same test station only a month before. So my view is that it is really up to the SVA inspector and what side of bed he got out of that day.

I would also suggest that there is more then a little bit of envy going on here. My guess is that SVA inspectors do not earn great money and when people wheel in a fantastic looking Cobra... well you can guess what they think.
