It's true. 427's were rare and expensive. So to keep up with demand they put in a readily available engine i.e. 428

Yep, I love those engines as much as the Windsor and Cleveland families, someone round the corner has just sold an old T-bird(chinese eye shape) with 390FE, sounding amazing even with 'quiet' exhaust, caught fire thro' sucking back thro' carb mind you Drinker? owner called it a dypsomaniac.
Cost and the heavy weight put me off having one in the Dax, love 'em though.

Right you are mate.. back in the good'oll days @ Carroll's shop a fellow i met
who worked there by the name of Steve Christ / FE Guru.. see HP book # 708
Told me a few stories on what the boys stuck in many a Cobra & Shelby GT's eg: 427 CO & 428 A block & PI & 410's hi-po engines and even some 390's believe it or not & most never new what they got...when the 427 SO or 428 CJ or SCJ were short in supply the boys improvised ../ got them out the door...a bit'o US Cobra history for you lads cross the pond.... oh & if you ask Carroll he'll say not a chance .. i have and that's the responce i got more then once/ don't ask me again.. wink wink! ... nice fellow though.
