vehicle mods

Just a vicious rumour, but my Pug is in the doctors having extorsionate amounts of work done.

The guy is a Mini specialist and MOT station and a mate. He has been warned that in 2008 new legislaton states that any post manufacturer mods (including wheels and tyres, in fact anything) will require the vehicle to undergo an SVA test.
This will include any mods made to any vehicle post SVA or manufacture and the vehicle would require another SVA.
The SVA is to include a different type of paperwork and photographic proof the vehicle is as. This would have to be produced for MOT, Tax and Insurance.
He modifies minis to every kind of concept and is worried, as even fitting a simple change of wheels or a wing mirror to bullet style is going to come into effect with this ruling.
As we know it took several years for the Sva to stretch it's legs and the MOTs to become computerised, but they are here and the proposed legislation would only take a couple of months to implement now everything is computorised.
The only vehicles that will not come into this money grabbing scheme are pre-sva cars and vehicles manufactured pre-2000. The reasoning is that post 2000 all parts can be returned to their original status and remain as so.

ANYONE KNOW ANYTHING ABOUT IT ?????????
IT'S COMING AND THE ACCESSORY / AFTER MARKET TRADE WILL DIE. BYE BYE HALFORDS.
Hello Ford steering wheel to a lot of you guy's :drive: :drive:

Re: vehicle mods

I can't see it myself, as the MOT man would have to play the full video taken at each kit cars SVA, and then compare every screen shot with whats in front of him?
Doubt it would happen personally; and your MOT would cost as much if not more than an SVA, and the only way to avoid the above would be to turn the MOT into an SVA.

Now, your man who does Minis, surely he's modding type approved cars in the main (ie BMW minis) or pre type approved if they're BL minis, not single vehicle approved cars??
So, as long as his declared modifications use type approved parts, and he does not make very significcant body chassis mods he's home free surely?

On the side of possibly good news regarding vehicle testing, the EU has asked the UK to harmonise on vehicle testing to 2 yearly instead of annual testing; although how the EU wants the test to be is anyones guess at the moment as all member states test differently.

Re: vehicle mods

Wouldn't cause me a problem, wind wings, sun visors and wheel spinners off, new set of reflective plates and it's back to SVA standard. :thumb: Even the Mountenay Steering Wheel was SVA compliant.

Re: vehicle mods

I think what this REALLY means is that if you should be involved in an accident (heaven forbid) the insurance company will use ANY deviation from the manufacturers/SVA spec to null and void your insurance. leaving you open to prosecution. THAT's how it's going to work
Anybody know what time the next flight to australia is

Yeh, wait for me at the airport; this country's more upside down than OZ.. What is it with these killjoys in the corridoors of power, you'd think they'd be too busy trying to prevent violent crime.
I know the Sierra was a good car in its time, but those rocker switches aren't horny are they?

Re: vehicle mods

Its far far easier to meddle pointlessly with the lives of the obediant law abiding tax paying masses, than stamp out the lawless drug dealing minority, sadly governments everywhere operate on the same principle, their policies just differ; try moving cash in Australia and you'll see everywhere is big brothered in one way or another.

Re: vehicle mods

As I see it, our problem is were almost germanic in our slavish following of new regulations that stream out of Brussels daily; we should be more latin and interpret what we get, like the French do particularly well.

Re: vehicle mods

So would this mean that you'd have to fit the tintop manufacturers recommended tyres too? might put the budget tyre manufacturer's out of pocket

Re: vehicle mods

Dont think so, if the tintop is type approved, and so are the tyres, and in th ecorrect size/rating theres no issue.
I think the guy with the Mini business has been wound up by a misunderstanding IMHO
