Favourite UK Roads

Hi All,

I do a lot of traveling with my job & whenever I drive down a new stretch of road I always consider how it would be to drive the AK down that road once the beast is built. Therefore I thought Id ask the forum what is your favourite driving roads.
I will start this post off by giving one of my favourite stretches of tarmac; this road runs for about 20 miles, takes in some fantastic scenary, has great tight curves & only has a few of speed cameras which are sensibly positioned in potential black spots. I am talking about the A628 between J35A on the M1 all the way over the peak district to Tintwistle. Would love to hear of your favourite stretches & maybe we could create a database of favourite regional roads.

Regards,
Martyn :thumb:

Re: Favourite UK Roads

:thumb: I know of many fantastic roads here in Scotland. No speed cameras, hardly any traffic and certainly no caravans. Wonderful scenery, and a lot of scary bikers out on the wekends. Drove down one of them this summer, an "A" class road that starts off as 3 lanes, reduces to 2 and finally ends up with passing places! About 40 miles long and I think I must have been lucky if I saw any more than 10 cars! I want to keep it that way, so I'm not telling you or anyone else where it is!:drive:

My favourite road it the one from Loch Lomond heading to Fort William...Breathtaking.:thumb: :thumb: :thumb:

The scenery is almost as big as the attachment images most of the Scots upload on here.

Re: Favourite UK Roads

For scenery - the road dropping into Glencoe winds hands down. Just too many tourists.

For twisty and scenery - got to be the road that crosses Bealach na ba coming from Applecross to Loch Kishorn. :drive:

Penrith to Alston, then on through to Hexham. :thumb:
Beautiful, and lots of great corners, hair-pins included.
I should mention though that the Heartside is one of the reasons why my parents moved out of Alston, since they were too often confronted by motor-bikes on that road who were screaming along and very often on the wrong side of the road.

Re: Favourite UK Roads

Easy one for me ... about 2 miles away there's section of the A61 from Thirsk to Scarborough which has a nice twisty bit for about 2 miles then about half a mile of a superb 1 in 4 gradient with a full hairpin at the bottom. The 1 in 4 section basically goes up the face of a cliff so you've got cliff at one side and a VERY big drop at the other side.

It'll be my first trip out in the cob when I get it on the road, can't wait to hear the sound bouncing off the cliff face. Had this route planned in my head for a number of years! :drive:

Lots of curves and long straights over the Pennines: Greenfield to Holmfirth. Cobras always create a bit of a stir in 'Last of the Summer Wine' country. But, maybe not as much as an old chap whizzing down a hill in a bath tub on wheels (extremely funny! Not).

But the surface on 'The Isle of Skye Road' (Greenfield, past Dovestones and over to Holmfirth) is shocking. Good one perhaps for finding all those irksome rattles though. I suspect that they tested the Mars rover on that road, since if it could cope with that terrain, Mars would hold no fears for it.

Did I mention, I'm from Diggle?
