Keeping things in a nice perspective.

I recently bought a seven-type R1 powered track car, going halves with a friend to have a toy until the cobra is built. It is very quick and quite frightening in a nice way! Coming in at about 155 bhp and weighing 505kg wet, probably not that much torque. I worked it out as having slightly more power to weight (c307) than a new Porsche turbo (299).
Anyway, checking probable output from the Chevy 383 I built and weight of a Ram, computerdyno-thingy shows 462bhp and 1150kg ish. Result: power to weight (c400) waaaay higher than the seven or a puny Porsche turbo!

The point is: ******g h*** how mad are these Cobra kits, I must have been insane opting for an engine like that and have definitely been visiting this site too often.

So thankyou very much to you all for being a bad influence and for having such an insane effect on my judgement. It has spurred me on to get the build finished.

Re: Keeping things in a nice perspective.

They're some pretty impressive numbers. But doesn't it make you think how insanely quick the R1 is!! I have a '99 R1 and every time I ride it I realise that no 4-wheeler on the road could get near it, even the hottest 7-type cars and the McLaren F1, Ferrari Enzo etc. With a bike you have so much more space to use the power, it's a massive adrenaline rush but so easy to lose your licence. On a good Sunday morning thrash a quick glance at the speedo rarely shows below a ton. The damn thing isn't comfortable to ride below 80. Round a circuit though some of the cars would definitely be quicker. Thinking about a Honda 2000-powered Elise to add to the stable for trackdays, they are awesome. The RAM has a good chassis so with decent rubber and a good set-up you should have a mighty quick car for trackdays. Bet you can't wait to get it on the road Ian.

Re: Keeping things in a nice perspective.

I had a bit of a race with some big bike, circa 1000cc, and lost but not by that much (420bhp SBC). He gave me a big thumbs up as well at the next set of traffic lights!!

Yep, reckon we MUST be insane..but hey, boredom is a SLOW death!
I guess the name of the game is track day practice to aclimatise to your new toy!
What concerns me is the Cobra's middle name seems to be 'sideways'..:eek
love all those se7en type cars; so uncompromised! Also I love watching Prisoner DVD S..

Re: Keeping things in a nice perspective.

I can only imagine how quick an R1 is. Self restraint is the name of the game there I reckon! I really do think no more power is needed as very few riders can get it down.
The engines are easy to come by, don't want to think about why!

Power?

You get used to it...................

Some days I think my car is slow. And then I have to brake for a corner..........

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.

I hope so Wilf.. news from DB is that max torque will be "at least 420ft/lbs" ..one small step for mankind but a big jump for me.
