Getting a Tonneau Made?

I have a Pilgrim Sumo & prior to taking it to Le Mans, I think it would be wise to invest in a tonneau cover. Price from Pilgrim is around £285.00 for a mohair tonneau (I don't want plastic!).

Would it be better/cheaper getting one made to measure for my car? I only ask, as the person who originally made the car wasn't exactly the most precise of builders & it'd be just my luck that the fixing points are in the wrong places & the £285 tonneau won't fit snugly!

I'm not quite sure what a "tonneau maker" would be known as on Google/Yellow Pages so any help would be brilliant!
I'm located north of Cambridge if that helps - if there's anyone locally (East Anglia).

Hannah

Have a look for car upholsterers or trimmers. They may make soft tops as well, or if not they will probably be able to point you in the right direction.

The tonneau I brought from Dax for my car was supplied without the fixings fitted in place. I fitted the pegs to the car first then made the tonneau fit the pegs. This involved making a hole in the correct place and then placing the fitting through the tonneau. Pilgrim may do the same so you should be able to make their tonneau fit your car quite well.

Craig.

AK's trimmer Doug Sutton does them for far less than that and good quality. He's in Peterbrough. I can PM you his mobile number if you wish?

You will have to send Doug a thick brown paper template of what you want, or take the car to him, I agree Doug's work is excellent, I have his hood and tonneau.

I'd take the car to him, it's not that far from me.

Just to confirm that the Pilgrim tonneau comes with a set of fastners - its the owners job to fit each fastner half to car and tonneau respectively, and you will need a tool to do tis (cost ~tenner). I needed to buy extra fasteres on mine as well. For everflex the price was just about OK, but I thought the mohair and double duck prices were excessive, particularly as it needs final finishing (including windscreen removal!). The AK trimmer soudns like the best value to me. Just make sure you get the correct place for the steereing wheel on your template.

They must use the "lift the dot fastener" on them then, if you need a tool to fit them.

DAX use the Tennax fasteners and if you have a choice go for these as they are far easier to fit and remove plus you don't have to tug at them to get them off.

Yes I thought the mohair price was a little bit dear! I'd rather I had someone look at it and fit it just right! After all, it will be getting a lot of use.
