Clive, before to start a new subject, we have first to complet this one
If I refer to the Robert's question listing I would like to add (I suppose we are talking about engine oil filter):
- Why we have to change it?
- When we have to change it?
- Did you it yourself?
- What are engine risks if we don't change it?
- Is it necessary after use to cut it to inspect the paper filter for a complet investigation of suspicious particle?
Robert, despite this basic mechanical question, you have opened a very interesting subject

Be careful cutting the filter, some metal dust could contaminate your oil and then give wrong analysis!

You are rigth denis84, we have to use a special tool to do it. Obviously, we are not obliged to use a professional (and expensive) tool like this one (see pictures) and it is not difficult to made a special own tool
