Question Nylock nuts

I am pretty sure the answer to this is yes, however I will ask anyway.

Can you use nylock nuts within a fuel tank, and will the nylon part be affected by petrol?

Nick

Nick,
You may get away with using Nylock nuts in your fuel tank, but it all depends on the type of plastic insert used. The fuel can break down the plastic over time which could end up in your fuel system. Why not go for the all steel lock nuts or deformed nuts to be on the safe side?

Edit: Now Tinka has said that I will shut up.

I am no expert but normally lock nots use a nylon insert which will not be affected by fuel but I am quite prepared for someone to correct me on this if I am wrong

Tinka M8, me neither. We had some problems with fuel oil degrading some plastic insert lock nuts at work. Not all of these lock nuts are of the same quality. The plastic insert seemed to crack and bits fell out. Can't say how long they were in service. Better safe than sorry.

Nylon 6 is petrol resistant, it doesnt like oil so much though (including diesel oil).
Youll be fine, you can buy 'binks' nuts (those with a slit in them that predated nylocs) or just use plain nuts and give them a slight nip in the vice to deform them slightly.
Or you could drill and lockwire them if you have access.

Hi Nick,
I am slightly confused as to why you should have nuts in your fuel tank anyway and if you have how are you going to get in to tighten them?

Well last time I purchased some nuts the guys in the fastner shop said dont use nylocs near my carb in case the petrol degraded the nylon.

I would also be wanting to understand more about "petrol resistant" Ive had watches which are water resistant, it does not mean they would survive bathing in the stuff!

Might be worrying over nothing of course....

Hi Clive,

I have had numerous problems with foam / send unit. I ruined the last by mistake so have bought 2no from Demon Tweeks and I am going to make 1 out of 2 (I have a side mounted sender unit) which will involve having a cranked arm on the sender.

Nick.
