Unhappy Roadside emissions check

Hello,
I’m sure there are people out there that can answer this conundrum.
Last week I was travelling home from work (Leeds to Sheffield A61) & I saw what appeared to be a speed camera on the oncoming carriage way, but on closer inspection the equipment was too involved i.e. there was 6 number small tripods with infra-red thingies atop (3 either side of the road)& 2 big tripods with what looked like cameras with zoom lenses on pointing towards the rear of passing cars. The vehicle accompanying this lot said on the side ‘Industrial emissions standards’(or something to that effect.
The question is, can your vehicle emissions be checked as you drive by ?
I ask this as I have just spent forever making easily removable cats for my car that could be inadvertently left out when ‘servicing’ post SVA/MOT which could get me into trouble if caught.
