    Buying Transmissions from the States..

Has anyone imported a Tremec from the States? Looking on ebay there is a seller shipping out the Ford box for $2,430 with bellhousing and mcloud clutch, that weighs in at £1,400 ish with taxes. Less than Repowers £2000 for effectively the same thing minus slave cylinder and arm.

eBay Motors: FORD TREMEC TKO 600 TCET-5008 W/McLEOD CLTUCH (item 260187346128 end time Dec-26-07 20:56:39 PST)

I know they dont ship to the UK but it gives an idea on prices.

Any opinions? A couple of months away from ordering yet but Id like to work out my options now.

    Cheers
    Andy

You should be charged VAT when it enters the country. This is £245 on top of your £1400. VAT will also be added to any shipping costs.

Import duty will be added to this as well (not sure of the amount) and you may get charged a handling fee by the courier.

Does the Re-power one also include the bellhousing? My Tremec from Re-Power was supplied with a bell housing to suit the Chevy, The clutch release arm, clutch release bearing, slave cylinder and fitting kit.

It all worked very well and was worth the cost.

    Hi Andy
I'm sure that it would be a little bit cheaper from the USA ... but at £1200 cost then probably about £200 shipping ... then £250 VAT you are getting close to the UK price. Then if it has had a clout during shipping ... problems returning the kit ... if there are any manufacturing faults etc. same problem. I bought my Tremec kit from Repower after working out all the prices, pros and cons etc. about buying from the States. Their delivery here to Spain was really cheap too ... around £75 if I remember right. I have bought almost all my other bits from the States (mostly Summit) and have found it cheap, but I was a bit worried about a major item as a gearbox ... plus I have a Chevy which is a bit harder to scource the bellhousing kit and other bits from the USA.
Just my 2 (euro) cents worth.

Was the Mcload clutch the internal throw out bearing type.

If so I hope you like removing gearboxes as they are well known to leak.

Thanks guys, my £1400 cost already included VAT and import duty, only thing not catered for was shipping. Will probably stick with Repower but you have to look!

    Cheers

Theres plenty of used Tremecs on Ebay USA; Ive seen recent ones for $700; well worth a punt IMO. Echo the comment re McLeod hydraulic release; total pants, only fit if youre a masochist with a taste for hydraulic fluid leaks and enjoy the tradition of annual gearbox remova1
Or you could really go period and buy a toploader, some lovely rebuilt ones around at sensible prices; but then I guess the bug would strike and youd end up buying a big block as well LOL
