Bullet cam/recording from the car

For the Le Mans run later this year, I'd like to take some on-board footage again for the old memoirs. My digi camera takes excellent video, but the sound is, frankly, dreadful. I'd like to be able to hook an external microphone up somewhere near the exhausts (in my case, very near or you'd never hear them). Failing that, I'd have to tape foam or somesuch over the microphone on the camera (a Pentax Optio S6) to deaden the wind noise.

However, Emma, the lovely Emma, has a camcorder. Nothing too flash, but I presume it will have inputs for an external mic. and possibly external cam. I'd like to mount a camera behind the wheel, like they do on Top Gear, so I'd need something reasonably rugged.

Any bright ideas?

Hi Robin,
My advice would be to get in touch with a reputable video camera supplier. I feel that this forum might have too many "Barrack Room" camera operators!
(No offence intended but horses for courses!)

Robin, have a look here. Motorsport Cameras High Resolution Bullet Cameras for Motorsport, Track Race and Rally

My mate used their gear to kit out his bike when he toured Europe.

You could always cheat like they do in all Hollywood movies and edit the sound on after
Always makes me laugh when a four stroke bike makes a two stroke noise...

What you need is a microphone on a pole and a well lubricated yorkshire terrier slipped over the end of it. It seems to work for all the professional camera crews.

When Santa required his list I did a bit of research and put down a 4KAM 4Kam - Helmet camera and onboard bike cam. bullet jobbie, apparently if you put the mic in the door pocket the sound comes out fine, ie no wind. Unless you've had too much cabbage of cousre I fancied the 99 quid version.
Oh the miserable sod never brought me one

Hmmm, interesting. The quality doesn't look too bad. Might have to get involved in a bit of 'carnography'!
