Hi Dave,

Thanks for the response. Symptoms are this:

Leave car running varying revs & the needle rises gradually upto 130°C.

Turn heater upto full & the temperature is intermittment but genrally blows cool.

Gradual water loss.

No obvious signs of water leaks.

I have checked the oil on the tip of the dipstick & it is not emuslified. I have also changed the stat, (that was a b*stard of a job!) but problem persists.

My missus is a very steady driver so it does seem odd the head gasket has gone - would a compression test help to prove / disprove a blown head gasket?

Regards,

Martyn

Needs a water pump, the plastic impeller has fallen of the back of the pump. I have never seen a blown head gasket on any of those engines in 14 years! If there is no water returning to the top of the header tank, then the water is not circulating. It's a crap job and will take you 4hrs. While your at it, you might as well replace the cambelt.

What a bad idea, Using the cam belt to drive the water pump.

We had a contractor in at work for a few months recently and he had an Audi A4 diesel. One morning he phoned up to say the car had stopped and was being recovered to a garage. It turned out to be a seized water pump had stripped the teeth off the cam belt and knocked out the timing.

New water pump, belt, cylinder head with all valvetrain components and labour cost him about £1600.

Craig.

The old front wheel drive escorts did the same thing, water pump would sieze strip the cam belt of a few teeth and then you waved goodbye to 8 valves and sometimes the whole engine (if it clocked off at speed LOL); could be worse; my ducati 916 needs a pair of timing belts every two years religious as ducati wisely designed the cam belt wheels such a small dia it knackers the belts quickly...doh Oh and you have to take half the bike to bits to do the job!!

Yes all very common, the water pumps and cambelt tensioners/rollers tend to brake before the belt does!! Thats why dealers always fit/replace eveything to cover themselves, that's why it ain't cheap.
