There just as bad! Seen them brake/rattle and chew up tensioners like no tomorro!

And then you have to remove the engine to fix it!

All my engines I've owned so far have been chain type. No problems yet.
My old Land Rover 4 cylinder uses a spring tensioner that is assisted with oil pressure to keep the chain tight. I rebuilt a 1963 International tractor once and that was all gear driven. Cam, Hydraulic pump and diesel pump all off the same helical gear drive train.

My friend recently sold a Jag XK8 that was perfect when sold, but then the tensioner gave up about 2 weeks after he sold it. New owner had to get it repaired at considerable expense.

Craig.

(If the oil is changed regularly and not on the bloody stupid extended intervals the marketing people foist on us and gullable idiots believe).

Got to agree with Wilf on service intervals.

My 1997 Range Rover had about 15000 miles between oil changes. It would run out of oil before that and the Rover V8 likes clean oil.

I change oil every 6 months regardless of millage.

Friend of mine pays a local garage to do an oil and filter change in between each of his BMW service intervals as we both feel they are too far apart.

Craig.
