Head Gasket - Not Cob Related

Guys,

I appreciate this isnt Cobra related but does anyone know how easy it is to change a head gasket on a modern engine such as a Golf 1.8 GTI Turbo? Reason I ask is the missus's has just gone & the garage are quoting £600 to renew it! The car itself is only worth approx £2.5k so am reluctant to spend that sort of money if I can do it myself over a weekend?

Any help / advice appreciated.

Martyn

Can't see a reason why you couldn't do it yourself.

I did one a Peugeot a few years back and that was easy enough. Do they make a Haynes manual for it?

You will need the new head gasket and any other gaskets you may remove to get to the head, New timing belt and possibly new head bolts.
You will also need to know the torque or angle required when doing up the bolts.

Some engines have very long bolts that go right through the head and block and hold the main bearing caps on. If it's one of these you will also need to remove the sump and secure the caps in place before removing the bolts.

Good luck

Craig.

Too expensive!

I would do it for £250 +parts.

Never heard of a head gasket failure on those engines. Sounds like the water pump has failed! (Plastic impeller broken) Is there water/oil mix?? Or just overheating?? I work for VW/Audi.

Dave, while we are talking VW, any idea why the central locking on a 1999 Polo should stop working, it was intermittent at first, now it has packed up completely.

CDL in polo's are vacuum operated, the pipes can split at the "A" piller and burn out the CDL pump as it runs constantly, or the pump has failed totally. Not uncommon either.

Anyone else??

This is the free lunchtime tech line.

It recently had a smack up the a4rse, could it be a pipe at the back that feeds the rear tailgate.
