| Emissions and the SVA Quick Question. Ive trawled through the archives and not found the info Im after as yet, of course some of the archive info is also out of date these days. Question. Im told the engine I am going to look at was a brand new crate motor from Real Steel 2 years ago, its been assembled from all new parts and its got a bloody great 670 cfm holley on it. (current car has no cats). So what will happen when it comes to SVA with this engine, what emmissions test will I have to pass and will I need cats? HELP!!!! cheers Andy 1st the Garage, 2nd the engine 3rd the kids..doh sorry, GD427! :} :}

| RE: Emissions and the SVA It’s not that you have to have a CAT, it is that there is no chance of getting through the emissions test without one because nothing else exists to reduce emissions to the right level. If that makes any sence. Unfortunately there is no way you’ll get a new carb engine through the test, no matter what you fit to it, they are just to inefficient. If you find it hard to get an answer from this forum you could try other ones with dedicated replica cobra sections Cheers, Andy http://www.corporanda.com/cos-race.gif http://www.fierofactory.org |

Who says he has to have a cat, the block could be 1960 odd, just because it has been rebuilt is immaterial > >Unfortunately there is no way you’ll get a new carb engine >through the test, no matter what you fit to it, they are just >to inefficient. > >If you find it hard to get an answer from this forum you could >try other ones with dedicated replica cobra sections Yes, 40 users or 800 users, now which one would have more info and people available to answer questions (just to even up the conversation somewhat)?? | RE: Emissions and the SVA just spoken to the chap. the engine was a brand new crate motor (brand new ford block) in 2000. Hes getting the engine no. over the weekend. Whats the levels for a 2000 engine? Cheers Andy 1st the Garage, 2nd the engine 3rd the kids..doh sorry, GD427!

| RE: Emissions and the SVA Andy This will help and give you some reading. http://www.cobraclub.com/html/cobra_76.shtml Can someone scan the Exhaust page from the latest SVA Manual?

| RE: Emissions and the SVA J Only going by what Andy said - 'brand new' and 'its been assembled from all new parts' Thus made the assumption it was a new block. Andy http://www.corporanda.com/cos-race.gif http://www.fierofactory.org |

| RE: Emissions and the SVA You know what they say, never assume, it makes an ASS of U and ME :P :P :P

| RE: Emissions and the SVA Rob, Many Thanks. Did I read somewhere that crate engines dont have traceable numbers? Maybe thats wrong... If its a 2000 block then I guess the emissions are a bit tight? Andy 1st the Garage, 2nd the engine 3rd the kids..doh sorry, GD427!

| RE: Emissions and the SVA Andy Your pertinent bits are.... B. Catalyst Test Using an exhaust gas analyzer and following the manufacturer's instructions, determine the proportions of carbon monoxide (CO), hydrocarbons (HC) and the lambda value of the exhaust emission. Identify the vehicle specific test limits Check the engine oil temperature. If it is below the minimum vehicle specific requirement, raise the engine speed to between 2000 -3000rpm and maintain this speed until the minimum engine oil temperature has been reached. Remove the temperature measuring probe. NOTE: Where, in exceptional circumstances, the engine oil temperature cannot be measured leg in the case of a dry sump engine), check for one of the following temperature gauge shows warm engine .cooling fan has cut in coolant pipes are hot. Perform a HC "hang-up" check and ensure that HC<20ppm before continuing, insert the analyzer sample probe. 1st Fast Idle Test: Raise the engine speed to the vehicle specific fast idle speed and maintain for 30 seconds If the engine speed drifts outside the fast idle speed range, begin the 30 seconds countdown again. During the last 5 seconds, note the readings for CO, HC and lambda, and record the results Compare the results with the vehicle specific limits and if the vehicle has passed the first fast idle test, go to paragraph /h), otherwise go to paragraph " h" Run the engine between 2000-3000rpm until al the emissions are within limits or for a maximum of 3 minutes. If the engine speed goes outside the fast idle range. freeze the countdown until the engine speed is within range once again. 2nd Fast Idle Test; Repeat the procedure as laid down in paragraph (d), then go to paragraph ("h") Catalyst stabilization; Raise the engine speed to the vehicle specific fast idle speed and maintain for 30 seconds. If the engine speed drifts outside the fast idle speed range then begin the 30 second countdown again. Idle test; Allow the engine to idle during a 30 second countdown. During the last 5 seconds, note the CO reading and record the result. Effective Date" HC (ppm/ at idle HC (ppm/ at fast idle CO (%/ atidle CO (%/ at fast idle Lambda from I August 1994 - . not listed in emissions publication N/A 200 0.5 0.3 0.97-1.03 lHC = Hydrocarbons] (CO = Carbon Monoxide] (Fast Idle = the relevant emissions publication limits otherwise = 2500-3000rpm] NOTE 1: If the vehicle meets the CO requirements but fails the HC check at engine idle speed it is acceptable if the HC criteria is met at 2000rpm NOTE 2: The "emissions publication" is the current edition of the publication entitled "In-service Exhaust Emissions Standards for Road Vehicles" published by the Department of Transport.
