Why are the roads so s**t?

Yesterday I drove my Cobra on the road for the first time, going to a pre-SVA MOT (SVA on Friday) and I now need dental and spinal attention.
I know we're all a bit mad for building a low, light car with stiff suspension, but why do the councils try to put us in wheelchairs.
Broadway (Manchester to Oldham) isn't bad at all. Nice and smooth. But as soon as I got on to any other roads, the amount of potholes, raised drains, patchy tarmac and general crappiness was unbelievable.
Now I'm pretty sure many people have thought this before, but....
We pay vast amounts of council tax, vat and fuel tax on petrol, road tax (notice how they all end with the same word).
IS ANY OF THIS SPENT ON THE ROADS?
It doesn't bloody look like it round here.

Surrey Roads aren't much better.

What car have you got. I have a Dax with 17" wheels and I think it is better on the roads than my Range Rover!
The ride height is good and the dampers are set on about the middle setting on the dial. Tyre pressure are 20Psi.
Feels great.

Craig.

It's a Sumo on 17, 45's. The back springs are a bit stiff, but that aint the point. The roads are bad even in my Focus. The Cobra just accentuates everything and makes you realise how much the councils and government are taking the p**s.
Whose up for a revolution?

Macadam is a type of road construction pioneered by the Scotsman John Loudon McAdam in around 1820. It consisted of creating three layers of stones laid on a crowned subgrade with side ditches for drainage. The first two layers consisted of angular hand-broken aggregate, maximum size 3 inches (75 mm), to a total depth of about 8 inches (200 mm). The third layer was about 2 inches (50 mm) thick with a maximum aggregate size of 1 inch (25 mm). Each layer would be compacted with a heavy roller, causing the angular stones to lock together with their neighbours.
