Gear Box Oil

I have had a leak from my gearbox (Borg Warner) for a while (originating from the speedometer sender unit) and traced this back to a perished 'O' ring. I have now replaced the faulty O ring and drained the oil. Can anyone reccomend which oil to use and whether to use a sealing compound on the drain / filling plugs.

Hi Nick.
Borg Warner/Transmission Technologies recommend ATF/Dextron2. The Filler/Drain are taper thread from memory so no sealer should be required.

Cheers Chris,

I thought about a bit of PTFE (however then starting worrying about it getting into the gearbox) just to be belt & braces

I wouldn't worry too much. If you seal the plugs it will only leak from somewhere else! It's a known trait (Marking their territory as Wilf would say) All the time it leaks, you know it's got oil in it

Nick, welcome back, guess you've got broadband sorted at home again now, or are you still working abroad? Chris, is that the right gearbox oil for a manual box?

Still in Belgium until Friday, then back for a week, broadband at home is not on (6-weeks now) Hoping to get a couple of hours in the garage next week, Iseem to find more to do than I am getting done. Would be interested on the outcome of the oil, as I was going to order it today.

Any news on LeMans yet?

I got the oil you reccomended, however Big Tone got me thinking with ref the type, like a Plonk#r I did not realise that ATF stood for Automatic Transmission Fluid (I thought it was aimed at me ~ A Total F#@kwit)

This is my gearbox

Borg Warner T5 Gearbox.

Is this still the right oil, sorry to question your advice, however me not being the sharpest tool in the box, I don't want to drop a clanger.

Cheers

Nick

Nick,
If that link is your box, ally not the old cast iron, then the last line of text on the picture says it all. ATF.
