Question Help with Jag Diff 43x13 input shaft

I've just removed my jaguar jag differential diff to replace the input shaft oil seal all was going well until the seal that I was provided was not the correct type i.e the originals visable surface was flat steel, the new seal you would be able to see mainly rubber seal also looks slightly larger in diameter ! it has the following stamps on the casting of the diff N4 M74 3871S S112 on the largest gear it has engraved 9873 & 43X13 on the input gear 9873 +6.

The main problem is that once I removed the seal it exposed play on the input shaft i.e. ~1.5mm in any direction , is this normal or is the input bearing shot ?

What are my options, other than a slight leak the diff was great nice ratio & quiet

Help would be much appriciated

Cheers

Different type seals is common. The new types usually have a rubber lip that stick out from the outside diameter. This should face the prop flange and forms a seal to stop water ingress around the seal and the housing.

Once the big nut on the flange is undone the pre-load on the bearing is lost so the input shaft will become very loose and wobbly.

There should be a spacer on the shaft that will be squashed outwards in the centre. This is a crush washer and should be replaced each time. Setting up the preload is a tricky operation though. You may get away by carefully tightening the nut again until it gets tight and all play is removed but this is a very crude way of doing it.

I have replaced this seal before by marking the position of the nut on the shaft and then returning to the same position after changing the seal. A bit late for that though I guess?

I think it is all detailed in the Haynes manual or there was a few CD manuals floating around the forum and E-bay.

If you can post a picture of the seals we should be able to say if it looks like the right one.

Craig.
