Rolling Road RV8

Finally managed to get my car on a rolling road today, and as well as doing this, it was a good excuse to have a day off work in hot weather and go for a good blast. There were several problems with how the engine was running before I got there one of which is I thought I was not getting the economy I thought (x( x( x( ) it should be doing,(I was getting about 19).Second if I was cruising at say 60mph and took my foot off the accelerator and then gently or otherwise started to accelerate again the engine would always hesitate. lastly I was getting excessive overrun. Well the initial power figure was 240bhp, but cruising at 60mph the co reading was 4.6 which is far too high but the acceleration figure was ok. So we changed the rods and retested and everything was as it should be .6 at cruising and 4.7 on full throttle. Then the timing was adjusted and time for the final result.

The power output for my Engine a RV8 with piper 285cam,large valves gas flowed and ported ( just in case thees are not the same thing( ) Webber 500,MSD ignition and AK headers into Custom Chrome side pipes. 275bhp at 5000rpm at the fly wheel, which is more than I was expecting. The drive home then went on to prove that all the other problems have gone as well. :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu :tu

The place I went to was, Wilshers Garages Ltd, at Wimpole, Roystone, just in case anyone is interested. Tel 01223 207226

Now to really enjoy some blasting {-} {-} {-} {-} {-} {-}

Well done Martin!

I thought you would need a rod change with your cam. Did you go up a stage to 1443? Also if you dont mind me asking, how long did it take to sort it all out & what was the cost? I'm still fiddling about with the different springs that Julian lent me & I find it just amazing what a difference tiny tweeks to the carb can do.
Glad its all come right for the Rutland blast for you - just make sure you lead the way

Cheers

Martin
I give the same recommendation for Peter Baldwin.My 4.6 went in at 200bhp @ 4000 revs (lack of fuel would'nt let it rev higher for any length of time) after a new fuel pump ,rod change to lean cruise mode,cant remember which one but its No 7 on Edelbrock chart,then minor timing change ,The engine went off his 300 bhp scale at 4700revs.Like you I drove home with a right big grin.It now flys thru 60 in second @ about 5500 and I have fitted a rev limiter as it wants to rev over 6000 if I'm not careful.Happy Blasting!!!!!!!

Steve

Which rev limiter do you use? My RV8 revs like mad with a light flywheel & I'm concerned about over-reving if I loose traction when the roads are damp. (OK, yes & on the hillclimbs aswell when I get a bit carried away){-} {-}

Cheers

RE: Rolling Road RV8

Hi Richard, I have to admit that I was getting really frustrated with trying different springs as I could get my engine to run worse but not cure the problem. So when I took it along to the chap I had put everything back to base settings. The rod I changed was to & in the chart which is part No 1448, with the numbers 6852 on the rod. If you want to try the same rod in yours to see what difference it makes, I went with Julian and he has not used this rod from his kit.

I was there for between 1-2 Horus and it cost me £105 all in, but well worth the cost as I have had a lot of questions answered. One of them was that on the odd occasion I thought I could here it pinking, and when he sorted the timing out he informed me that I had got a good high compression and that for the best results in running the car I should use unleaded plus with an additive. {-} {-} {-} {-}

see you soon Martin :tu :tu :tu :tu

RE: Rolling Road RV8

Hi Steve, yes he is a top bloke, it must be something to do with the cam as I have had to change to the same rod's as you.Have to say after all the trouble I had at Elvington I bought an MSD ignition with a 6000rpm rev limit and feel a lot better knowing it is there as on one occasion that I know of I have rev-ed it to 7000RPM x( x( x( x( Not something I want to repeat.Glad to here you have sorted your car out now.How is the poss of power steering going?:P :P :P
