Running Gear

A question asked before no doubt But opinions change Im sure.

How much would you think I should need to spend to recon my own Jag running gear. Id not touch the diff (get that one done professionally). ((all in cost))

Also with a 302 with the Edelbrock performer package Im told Id be best off with a P/lock diff, yey or nay?

I dont mind doing the donkey work if it saves enough cash.

Thanks for the input.

LSD camp is split 50/50. An LSD helps in cornering, however some people feel that it increases lift off over steer, however unless you do something disastrously wrong, there really isn't a need to lift off, just throttle back slightly which mitigates the risk.

Hope this helps, but it probably won't.

Personally, I prefer an LSD as you can modify the slip ratio (when it is being built) and it ensures that drive to both back wheels is being fed correctly.

Slip ratio for normal day to day driving should be around 40%, if you are going to do significant track work, then a slip of 70 to 80% makes things easier and prevents the lift off oversteer but still retains the characteristics of the slip diff.

My Son had a toy steering wheel which he used to spin furiously, making loads of go-faster noises, leaning into all the tight corners, perhaps running the government feels a bit like that. You make all the noises, but when you stop you haven't really gone anywhere.

RE: Running Gear

RE: Running Gear

Andy, I recon'd my front and rear Jag suspension back in 1992 and though I cannot recall the numbers in detail I do recall buying small carrier bags full of small parts and walking away with significant bills each time (hundred of pounds) - I replaced all moving parts pretty well throughout - bearings, spindles, and internal parts on the brakes (pistons and seals) and all u/j on teh drive shafts and had the diff reconn'd by a specialist (Eddy Reece at Wards). If I were to do it again I would cost very carefully all the current prices for parts versus buying complete units ready done from Eddy. I don't believe you save much if you do it yourself. The only way to make rreal savings is to not do stuff.

RE: Running Gear

Andy,

I've just looked at doing exactly that when I ordered my Dax, after doing some calculations it worked out about £200 dearer to buy the non-assembled rolling chassis with everything already re-con'd for me.

I thought the extra money spent just means I can build up the chassis that little bit quicker.

IMHO

Regards

Michael

If you don't use a Power lock then you will be spending about £1200 to do a full proper job including buying the axles.

Dave is 100% correct, I spent £900 on parts to re-con and £250 for the axles. I don't know what Ward's charge for the fully re-conned units, but I would certainly not go through the hassle of doing the job again, my advice buy from Ward's.

Dave, out of interest what is the retail price of all the re-con parts from Ward,s?
