Sierra Donor List

Just picked up my J-reg 1.8LX H/B ready for my Pilgrim Sumo build.

I'm OK with the obvious bits I need, but what else can I salvage.

Things like seatbelts, wiring loom, door locks - remote & linked to the car alarm and key fob etc...

Does anyone out there have a list, I'm on a tight budget so the more I can re-use the better.

The last thing I want to do is get rid of the donor to the scrap yard, then go buying bits back.

Also, how do I scrap the car, but retain the V5 document. I thought you had to declare the car scrapped on the V5 ?

Can anyone help.

Jon

RE: Sierra Donor List

Jon, if you de-clair the car as scrapped :} :} :} you might as well through the V5 in the bin as it will be totally useless. When you get rid of the car make sure that you have removed all the chassis No Reg plates and any thing that will identify the car because by Law now the scrap yard has to inform the powers that be that the car has been scrapped. The normal way to get rid of what is left of the car is to cut it up and hire a skip.x( x( x( x( x(

As far as reusing the Sierra loom goes I think you will find this is a really bab move as 1,the Ford looms were never that good in the first place,2,you wont need half of the wiring anyway,3,you can never tell what anybody has done to the loom in the past.
Most looms you will get from the manufacturers are only about £150 and I think you will never regret getting one.

As for door locks What locks ????????????
Seat belts Yes Door lock mechanism Yes

Thanks Martin, looks as though I'm going to have fun with a grinder !

Is there anything else on the sieera that may come in useful ?

Am i right in saying the seatbelts are from the rear.

Is it the rear or front door mechanics ? What about the boot lock mecahnics ? Will I be able to use the central locking fob / alarm ?

Jon

RE: Sierra Donor List

I don't know about the Sumo but most Cobras don't have door locks as such. The only key is the ignition.
there are no external door handles.
The seat belts are more likely from the rear.
I prefer a full harness myself.
You may be able to take what you want including the V5 and pay a breaker to take away the rest. But do not declare it as scrapped until you register the Cobra.

Jon

Transfer the Sierra V5 into your name.

You will need the door catches from the front doors of the Sierra.

The seat belts from the Sierra are no good, as will need long stalks to go down the side of the seat, the Pilgrim ones are quiet cheap.

As mentioned, buy a custom loom from Pilgrim, I used a Sierra loom on my first Robin Hood build, what a pain in the arse.

RE: Sierra Donor List

As long as you have also taken the steering column, steering rack, front hubs, rear radius arms, diff, diff mounting, rear hubs etc, the only thing I would reinforce, don't use the Sierra loom.

I did, I was very tight, but the headache was not worth it plus you end up with too much wiring that cannot be cutout or shortened.

The Sierra seats will not fit as they are too wide. Make sure you keep the door actuating rods as they will be needed and also try to keep the bonnet prop as this MAY be of some use.

I would keep the Sierra as long as possible because, if you are tight for space, it makes a great shed !!

Have fun !!!!

RE: Sierra Donor List

Thanks folks, looks like I'm buying a pilgrim loom.

Already started to use the sierra as a shed, as I've only got a small garage.

But already had the wheel trims nicked, so I doubt I'll be leaving anything of any remote value in there !

RE: Sierra Donor List

John,
I think most things have been covered. I did the same as you but then decided to go for a Granada spec. You get bigger front hubs/discs, a bigger/stronger dif, the u/j's are much better and rear discs, (as do some Sierra's) In my opiniun drums on the rear look awful, and the the hubs are 5 stud which I also think look better, (I'm useing rep. Hallibrands).
I got the lot from a scrappy, removed and delivered and the old Sierra taken away for £90. New calipers, discs pads all round and an exchange rack cost me not a lot of money.
The man at the VRO won't know the diference, (fingers crossed), so the Sierra V5 should get me an age related plate.
Did anyone mention the brake deceleration valve? There's been some talk as to wether it's needed or not, but why take the chance when it's so easy to fit?
Also the propshaft bolts, you can't get replacements from Ford, not in my area anyway.

RE: Sierra Donor List

Me again, I see no one has mentioned the master cylinder and servo. Also you may be able to re-use the screen washer bottle, unless it's the type thats built into the front wing.
Keep an old track rod end to use to mod. the hub, cheaper than a 7 degree taper drill.
Battery leads, earth straps, column switches, wiper delay relay, (it's the red one), fuses, bulbs, that's about it I think.
