Chevy ID

Evening all,

After recent clutch problems, I am now planning to whip the clutch out (this involves moving the engine / clutch housing & gearbox forward 10" and then splitting them) on Saturday morning to inspect and ascertain whether to renew. I decided today that if I was to order the clutch (on sale or return) if I needed it, it would there ready to put in. The supplier has aked me what engine I have and what year it was produced, as there are 4no different clutch types for it.

Can you help?

I have a 5.7L Small Block Chevy, coupled to a Borg Warner T5 gearbox, the engine number is V0813ZZ1 (this is the number stamped in front of cylinder number 2 at the front)

Any assistance greatly appreciated.

Nick.

There are 2 types of block (basically 1 piece rear main seal or 2 piece rear main seal) You should be able to find out which you have from dating the block to your engine number - try http://www.mortec.com/location.htm

BUT......

There are 2 types of flywheel available 153 or 168 tooth (on the ring gear). You won`t be able to work out which you have until you split the gearbox from the engine, unless you can climb under the car, remove the cover plate from the front of the bellhousing and count the ring gear teeth while someone turns the engine over SLOWLY with a socket on the front of the crank.

You can tell the difference between the two fly wheels but unfortunately experience is the main factor when looking at them.
The 168 tooth has a different starter motor. On the chevy block there are two lots of holes for the starter, one set are closer to the centre line of the engine and are in a straight line with the fly wheel, there are for a 153 tooth fly wheel. The holes for ther 168 are staggered, with the inner most fixing being fuirther towards the front of the engine.
This only works when you have std type starters fitted though.
The one give away should be however if the starter motor (Whichever type) uses the outer most fixing, this should indicatwe the bigger flywheel.
Even when you have acertained this there is a possibility that the bigger flywheel as had the smaller clutch cover fitted. (11" vs 10.5").
And the final problem is knowing which gearbox you have as the T5 can have different splines on the input shaft.

So there you go, clear as mud.

Thanks

Paul / Dave,

Thanks for the assistance, I think Dave's last line hit the nail on the head, he lost me on the second sentence.

Revised programme ~ take clutch out and identify then. Impatience will be my undoing.....

Thanks chaps

Nick

If your parts supplier will supply sale or return as in your original post, then order every type he can get hold of.

Hi Nick. Your T5 "should" have an ally tag under one of the bolts on the nearside with a 1352*** No on it. Looking that No up here Identifying and Assembling a T5 5 Speed will tell you the No of splines on the output shaft. That should narrow it down 50%

????? This is what happens when you take advice from a man with his distributor at the wrong end.

I think he means "Input shaft"

Hi Nick

Looks like we won't be seeing your Magnum at Stoneleigh. Mine was hoping to meet up with yours, get to know each other and maybe in 9 months time a little Magnum might come into this world. Oh well!!!!
Good luck with the clutch. Phil
