Engine HELP!!....... No key but turning!

Hi everyone

I wonder if you can help please.

Since Paul (husband) had cancer and having the terrible chemotherapy my husbands patience and concentration is not as it was before the treatment and so would really appreciate your help.

My husband Paul put the engine in and gear box on Sunday and fitted all the pipework and filled all fluids etc and then he was ready to try the engine.

He connected up the battery and without the key in the ignition and not turned on the engine began to start up? The engine was turning as soon as he connected the battery.

He says he connected the battery lead and the the two brown 10ml rings to the starter (both brown rings together to the starter). Is this correct?

The car has a mini torque starter.

Thank you for all your help.

Diane

Sounds like you have connected the battery lead straight to the starter motor terminal, the battery lead should be connected to the solenoid - normally part of the starter (mounted on top) but sometimes a remote unit. The wire from the ignition switch connects to the small terminal on the solenoid.

Here's a pic of mine. I think the battery connects to the outside large terminal and the ignition switch to the the small terminal.

But, as you can see mine isn't fitted yet

Thank you for your help - I have just phoned Paul (hes back to work a few days a week till he is strong enough to do a full week).

He said he was not sure if it was a "earth strap" and that is where he probably wired it up wrong at that point. (Not sure if I took that part of his message correctly?).

Good to get back to work, I went back part time, afternoons initially as the mornings were the worst for me (still are but that's probably something different).

He does every other day at the moment - the days between helps him recover. He finds its his feet (still gets pins and needles and ache from the chemo).

Paul has always hated mornings - even before all of this lol!
