SVA yesterday

Failed my SVA yesterday on 10 different things:

1/ Emissions HC 4.95 and CO 1690 (should be under 4.5 and 1200)
2/ Steering isn't self leveling
3/ Speedo isn't working
4/ Handbrake isn't got enough force and the forces aren't balanced (125N on n/s, 65N on o/s)
5/ Handbrake nut was loose
6/ Front indicators are still too low
7/ Missing clutch rubber pedal cover
8/ Missing brake rubber pedal cover

Plan is get someone to tune the engine and fix points 2,3,4 & 5 (i could do 5 but he'll be fixing it when hes fixing the main handbrake problem anyway). The rest of the stuff i can do in minutes.

All in all it could be alot worse. The tester said he hated kit cars and the best place for them is at the bottom of a ravine. But he said my build quality was excellent. Was quite chuffed that he said the car will NEVER pass the noise emissions but he came back and the box was ticked (obviously he was wrong). As i said its not so bad i'd rather they went over it with a fine tooth comb and it be reliable and not freewheel down a hill when i park it. I actually knew it needed tuned but thought would get it seen to after SVA (apparently not)

Were a couple of scary moments getting it on and off the ramps and i don't want to even go into the story about the night before trying to get hold of a car with tow bar (even though i had been guaruanteed one and it didn't happen).

In summary, its not the end of the world and the problems can apparently be fixed, its just the inconvenience of borrowing a trailers and cars with tow bars

Si

Hi Si, nothing to bad & I agree with your comment I think we all want our cars to be SAFE, SOLID & ROADWORTHY.

Good luck Tony.

Just as well when I attempt SVA that I do not live in Scotland if thats the attitude of the testers. Especially galling is the amount of highly modified hot hatch type cars in Scotland which get away without having any examination (apart from MOT).

That's funny...that's exactly what I thought about the examiner in Aberdeen after he spent 5 hours on my Toja.

Good luck with your retest. What age block have you got from Fastco. I got lucky with a 1975 and am hoping for visual smoke only.
My SVA application went in yesterday. 1st choice Aberdeen. I take it you went to Bishopbriggs. I would not be too pleased with such comments about kit cars.
Do not know of any Chevy experts in Scotland. I would call Daryll, he should advise you.

Ian.

block is a 1977 (as old as me) and yes test was in bishopbriggs. Actually wasn't too happy about the tester hanging over the paintwork cigarette in hand balancing an inch of ash on the end of it. Apart from that the guy gradually mellowed a bit and was alright in the end.

You must be joking about this ? Smoking is banned on the premises of the SVA test centers and to have an examiner holding a lighted cigg over your vehicle is a major fire hazard. Does his training as an SVA tester not go over the fact that these cars run on Petrol?

Along with the examiners poor attitude, he should be discipled or suspended.

i can 100% guarantee he was standing cigarette in hand hoverring above my engine. Actually the guy wasn't bad, even recommended a place that could tune my V8.

Have now found a place to tune my engine (will check all the timing figures in the book daryl sent me - which i forgot i had). Also think i might have solved the self centering problem (spring spacer missing from under the cancel cam in the steering column). If that doesn't solve it i have a list of things to check.

Si, I don't think the spring spacer in the steering column will make any difference to self steering centering. Is it possible the lower wishbones are on the wrong sides of the car? I know this from experience. I had mine all assembled and was then told by Dax that I'd put them in the wrong way round. The Build Manual isn't too clear on this point which is why I got it wrong The steering was not self centring because there was no caster angle at the wheel until I swapped them round.

Cheers
