Electric fuel pump Big Block Ford

I have a problem with my 429 motor regarding fuel supply, I cannot get the mech pump to work correctly(stripped and checked eccentric cam which is ok)anyway I need an electric pump to supply fuel at about 5 psi to get the motor shook down but dont want at this stage to buy an expensive one as I still intend to go mechanical.Any suggestions as to a suitable pump cheap and readily available for the interim??? The problem with the mechanical pump is, at present it wont fill the in-line filter so is not supplying enough to keep her running. Thanks in anticipation. Dave Keane :} x(

You can normally get the motor running by rigging up a petrol can above the engine and relying on good old gravity to feed the carb with juice. Either that or have you tried an old washer bottle motor ?

Cheers,

Tony

Contrary Mary

You will have to siphon it out the can or bottle and take the chance of a gob full (drank loads!)or chuck some down the hole and it will run for a short period Eric.:9

Dave,

Sorry but the washer bottle motor theory will not work. The rubber in washer bottle pumps is not compatable with fuel - it will swell and stop the pump running. I tried this as an emergency roadside fix many years ago when the mech fuel pump cam failed on my Ford V6, so I tried to re-route the fuel feed via the washer pump - worked for about a minute before the pump siezed. Ended up working the pump lever by hand to fill the carb, then driving/rolling as far as possible on a carb full of fuel. Took ages to do the ten miles back to home but got there eventually!

Russ

Ah Russ,

That was because you had a Ford washer motor, you should have used a Chevy washer motor.......................

( I found an old Marina/ Ital pump worked really well....)}(

Cheers,

Tony
