rough horsepower estimate

hi guys, what would be your opinion on my estimated engine hp,its a 1978 ford 302,rebuilt using new rings, valves, standard cam, crank bearings etc.... weber 500,mallory ignition system, eidlebrock torker 2 intake, and gds custom made exhaust system
The mustang the engine came out of is listed as being 150hp which is pretty sad,but it was an emissions friendly unit, most of which i dumped. It feels very lively having only put 450 miles on it,but am curious as to what hp it should be producing.
planning on modding later next year but want to enjoy the car a little first!:tu

Hi Craig, take a look at this link it should give you some idea and for possible upgrades too.

we should get together for a run soon before the weather turns too cold.

RE: rough horsepower estimate

Just take it for a rolling road tune - many places do it (look around though as prices can range wildly from 50+). The dyno sheet will reveal all like bhp, torque e.t.c.

Craig: the cam is the heart & soul & as you say it's standard then it must be holding it back, especially as you have the custom exhaust to let it breathe. One like the Performer would suit this engine & up your bhp a fair bit.
If you go for a meatier cam then I'd also think about a bigger carb like a 600cfm for more rpm music (wouldn't cost much at all as the Weber would return a fair amount of money to cover a bigger one).

Just my two-pence worth (is that the saying?).

RE: rough horsepower estimate

Just as a side note, I spent a bit of time talking to Ken at EDA last night about my LS1, and as usual we got onto other topics.

He has just sent out a 289 engine to a customer and it produced over 400hp, not bad for a 289!!!!!!

RE: rough horsepower estimate

I thought there was a rolling road up your way, near Caerphilly? Sorry about the spelling.
Some where near the A470. I can't remember who told me.
