Gearbox suitable for a 350 chevy?

Where can I find a gearbox suitable for a 350 chevy.
I'm looking for something rebuildable rather than a something new. How about a jaguar gearbox? Also bellhousings is this a "hens teeth" item?
Thanks
Simon

RE: Gearbox suitable for a 350 chevy?

Turbo-Hydramatic 350 (TH350) Made by Chevrolet (and Buick combined I think) and was the most popular box in the States on the back of a Chevy 350. Bomb proof, highly modifiable with shift programming kits etc and best of all, no time wasted changing gear!!! much faster than a manual I think (others will dispute this, but why do drag and strip racers prefer auto?). 25 Million made, loads of spars available off the shelf.

Getrag sourced from a jag would be OK, Toyota Supra Turbo is a strong box. There was one in the for sale section a while back complete with Chevy bell housing.
Tremec TKO etc.

I`m planning for an autobox also
I was going for the 700r4(it has an overdrive) but works out 3 inches too wide for the GD tunnel

Oh well - back to the drawing board:}

Keep away from the 700-R4 its pants! It is the only TH box to under-perform. Why do I know this? I own a 1982 Cross-Fire Injection Corvette which has an R4 fitted and boy are they poor. Also own a Cob (well my daughter does) with a TH350/Chevy 350 - perfect combo. By the way, the Vette is for sale if you know of any interested parties.

RE: Gearbox suitable for a 350 chevy?

What about the TH400 as well? Don't most quarter milers use these boxes with quickshift kits & other goodies to avoid some of the drag & get the revs up from the standing start (i.e: it's a manual without the extra pedal)? I'm not too clued up on the autoboxes.

It may not be important but if you go for the TH350 or TH400 then one of the ratios is slightly different (2nd I think - depends if the donor was a car or truck). May noy matter as I said.

In the US you can get performance rebuilt TH350/TH400s for under $1000. I've seen some as low as $600.

Must be honest, don't want an auto. Had a Cobra with one before...never again.

RE: Gearbox suitable for a 350 chevy?

Sometimes an auto takes my fancy to and with a manual shift but they can be very heavy boxes.

What about sourcing an early chevy v8 t5. That should bolt straight on and you can install uprated internals if you wish. Oh, the're light.

Boost it, I do!
