Import Duty on second hand items

Hi all,
am I right in assuming you dont have to pay import duty, etc, on secondhand items from the States? Just got an invoice for £111 for a secondhand supercharger.

RE: Import Duty on second hand items

That was my understanding too.

Did the shipping information say 2nd user parts on it, if not the good ol boys at C&E may have thought it was new?

How long did it take for the bill to arrive? Ive shipped in some new bits which arrived last week but there no sign of a bill as yet?

Hope you get it sorted.

Oh try looking on the customs website, sorry cant remeber the address though a search for customs or duty will bring it up.

RE: Import Duty on second hand items

Thanks, I got the package over a week ago, I think ive dumped all the paperwork that came with it. Fed Ex have sent me the bill. Tried ringing them but thats a waste of time as "All our operators are busy at the minute"!!:}
Will try emailing them,
Phil

Don't worry, you can be sure they'll find you or me. They only miss the drugs, guns and immigrants. Engines are easier to find.

Sorry Phil but I think you are wrong in your assumption.

Any goods shipped into UK with a declared value (new or old) is liable to import duty and VAT.

Duty on parts from the States is around 4% VAT as per norm 17.5%

No way round it unless you smuggle it in on a flight{-}
