Finally - It's Passed!

How happy am I

A Massive THANK YOU to all that have helped me with advice over the last 2 1/2 years. My Rover powered Sumo managed to fly through the SVA at the Mitcham testing station Yesterday morning. It was in starke contrast to the first attempt which saw my beloved vehicle unable to complete half the tests due to a faulty igntion module.

Vital statistics are:
Speedo was 1mph out at 70
Exhausts rang out at 100.3 Db left 100.6 right @ 3200 rpm
Front Axle weighted in @ 514 Kg
Rear Axle weight was 520 kg with full fueltank
brake balance was spot on, although I had a slight imbalance between the rear drums with the left being 46% stronger - Still it feel with-in test tolerance levels. I will be stripping both drums down and checking anyway before I embark on any long journeys.

With luck I'm on course to being able to drive it legally to the kitcar show in Exeter this year... :tu

With my own fair hands yes. Trust me though - it looks nicer in the photo. So plenty of room for improvement in the mk II version The problem was with the clue I used - it melted the sponge layer, resulting in a slight ripple effects on the leather as it was pulled tight - Doh! I have already made the moulds but doubt I will actually remake until the end of next year where I will be stripping it all down to be painted by the professionals.

Congrats Dan,

looks real good, I see that you have gone without the bars and over riders, can't make up my mind about that.....

Another question is where did you get your wheels and tires from?? (are they 15 or 16'')? look good...

How did you do the cockpit edging?

Ready for winter eh....

RE: Finally - It's Passed!

The Rims are 15"
The tyres are Copper Cobra's imported from the states.
I'm getting them swapped this week for some pyrelli wet weather tyres in preperation for the winter

I've also ordered a hardtop roof that I hope to have fitted prior to the Exeter show - although it will be unpainted and left in it's white GRP state until next year.

Making the body rolls wasn't too tricky. Simply put :

1) Mask the lip of the cabin with duck tape. This will prevent the resin sticking to the cabin.

2) mask of surrounding area with paper or bin bags to prevent accidental drops of resin sticking to other areas of the car.

3) Lay up a laminate on to the duck tape that is about 1/2" oversized - remember to wetout with resin prior to applying the first layer, I found using a heavier weight single roving much easier than multiple Chopped strand layers as the resultant laminate had a even contour to the surface. I used a tissue layer to provide extra strength to areas made up of cut pieces.

4) when a satisfactory laminate has been built up and left to cure for a few days it can be marked for cutting then removed. I used an L shaped piece of wood which I notched a V in 1 1/2" in from the base (I'm sure I have a photo of it somewhere) I placed a big fat magic marker in to the V, and dragged it along the edge of the cabin giving me an instant guide line of 1 1/2" to which to trim the surround with the angle grinder.

5) Test fit pieces to ensure edging between doors is good. modify to make good.

6) Wrap outside surface in a foam sheet - Don't do what I did and use a glue that melts it.

7) stretching the leather over it is a real bore. The front is ok and fairly easy, but the sides pieces are a night mare where they fold under. The rear I ended up cutting and stitching back together to make it fall correctly.

Fit to the car - I've used Velcro to hold them in place. The front I've had to put 2 screws in either end as it also serves to hold the top of the dash in place.

RE: Finally - It's Passed!

The supplier of the tyres is unknown to me. I got them from a friendly local garage who charged me a trade price for them. I will try and find out who the tyre factor is.

Hard top is going to be supplied by the chap who advertises in the back of snake torque. I will need to speak with him to find out if one can be made in time for Exter as when I spoke to him some month ago now he was under the weather and had halted production.

It is similar in design to the one pictured. And allows easy access to the petrol filler cap as well as the boot (No half boot required)

Attached are a few general shots of the surround

RE: Finally - It's Passed!

Does he only do a hard top for a Pilgrim?
Or various ones or one size fits all, with mods.
