RE: Brake Calipers

I will give the compressor a go tomorrow. It nice to see that someone else as been the guinneapig, and been there before me. I intend to wrap the callipers in cloth and when one does pop out, I'll hold it back into place with a small G clamp.
I will let you all know how I get on, hopefully with all four pistons removed from each front caliper with no personal injury to myself.

Its funny but the more problems I get with the Jag runing gear, the more satisfaction I get from solving each one.

Cheers for all the advice.

Lee

RE: Brake Calipers

Could you give me more details on the brake calliper piston remover, i.e. on what page it is shown on in the Machine Mart catalogue or what the part number is?

Cheers

RE: Brake Calipers

When I had this problem I removed the old bleed screw/valve, tapped it for a grease nipple, screwed in the grease nipple then refitted the bleed valve tight. Then used a grease gun to fill the caliper up with grease and force the pistons out. Every time I've done it the other ways mentioned above the pistons have been damaged. Doing it the grease gun way is messy, wasteful of grease etc. but won't damage the pistons or caliper. Grease must be removed from caliper with petrol if necessary, before new O rings are installed. Good luck. Ian

ps if you do it this way use the biggest grease gun you can find to save time.

RE: Brake Calipers

Lee, where did you source your Jag donor parts from ? I am looking for somewhere that will do the dirty work for me and deliver the parts/V5 etc.

Cheers

RE: Brake Calipers

Hi Lee,
I thought about doing the calipers up myself but priced a few auto factors up first, ended up getting the fronts for £45 each and rears for £75. If you price the bits up ie pistons (probably knackered) seals etc and get them PERFECTLY CLEAN you can only do half a job compared to the professionals.
Just my opinion.

RE: Brake Calipers

Hi Nick

I bought the Jag running gear from John Gordon Jaguar Spares in Accrington, they advertise in Snake Torque. I have been dealing with a chap called Les who has been very helpfull and supportive so far.

Cheers

RE: Brake Calipers

HI Shane

Where did you get the above prices from for the callipers. I don't know if your aware but Dax will supply you with fully reconditioned front and rear callipers zinc plated on an exchange basis for £55 each. You are correct, it is not worth doing the callipers yourself if you can buy callipers for £55 each. However I decided from the start, that I wanted to refurb all my own running gear so that I could learn as I went along. I'm in no rush to finish the project and I am enjoying the challenge and learning curve that doing everything myself has brought.

Cheers

RE: Brake Calipers

Cheers for the advice Ian. If I can find a grease gun I will give your idea a go, if not, I'll just have to hope that using a compressor works without causing any damage to the callipers. I'm not too bothered about causing damage to the pistons, since I am changing all of them for new ones.

Cheers

RE: Brake Calipers

For anyone who has been following this thread I have been working hard on the front calliper pistons.

I tried the compressor but this did not work at all. I then tried knocking the pistons back into their callipers and they moved about 1mm. I then was able to move them back to their original position. I repeated this process several times and kept spraying with WD40. Over a time the pistons started to move a bit further. Eventually after approx 30 mins I was able to completely remove a piston. The moral of this story is, IF AT FIRST YOU DON'T SUCCEED, TRY, TRY, AGAIN.

Cheers
