Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

I'm thinking that as Winter arrives I need to keep busy and would very much like to fit a NOS kit just for the sheer fun of it all. Car will be off the road soon to fit a hydraulic clutch setup (Sumo using cable conversion) and to fix the poxy oil leaks.

Has anyone already tried this? If so, what were the good/bad points?
Are there any difficulties fitting the NOS injectors into the carb/inlet manifold?
Do you know of any good/reputable suppliers, and what sort of prices would you expect to pay for a complete kit (including bottle)?

Help appreciated.
Cheers,
Tony B

RE: Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

Afternoon Tony,
I know NOS do nitrous for holley carbs at about £580 not sure about webber carbs though, if you find out let me know please as i'd prefer using webber carbs than holley :tu

RE: Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

I didn't fit it but I did lots of research. What most people do is add a sandwich plate under the carb. This is used to house the NOS injector and the additional fuel supply. If you are using a holley or direct edelbrock replacement and you have at least half an inch clearance it will fit very easily as the bolt pattern on the manifolds / plate is all the same. Holley do do a 'cheater' system that sits inside the pancake filter directly above the carb barrels. The idea here is that not only is it hidden but it requires no additional clearance above the air filter.

The other issues are how to trigger the NOS. The are many ways, big red switch, throttle position, at certain rpm or any combination.

As for good or bad points - it's a question of perception.

Before you do it though, your engine must be in tip top condition if you don't want it to blow up and you'll probably need to retard your timing a little.

Any questions you have will be promptly answered if you use the Bulletin Board as I've found in the past.

RE: Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

Tony,

you have basically the choiice between two types of system, either a plate system or an injection system (single or multi-point). Plate system only suitable for carb engines. You inject N2O and fuel in metered ratio by fitting of jets similar to carb jets.

Triggering and control by several of many ways, mainly master arm switch+full throttle activation(+optional rpm controller, progressive controller, fuel and NOS pressure sensors, retard control, NOS purge system and associated fuel and NOS pressure guages, bottle heaters etc etc).

Can be as simple or complicated as you want.

Simple 50HP system wouldn't need much more than a momentry on button fitted on the steering wheel or top of gearstick. Anything more than that and you need to consider how much of the optional list you need.

Plus and minus points are questionable. What I consider a plus others may consider a minus etc.

Down side - get it wrong and you'll be buying a new engine.

Russ

RE: Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

Thanks guys, some interesting points there. Especially like the option of the plate that fits straight onto the Webber. As I'll be sticking with the carb for now (don't fancy EFI just yet) it sounds the easiest option.

Russ, I remembered the blue Cobra with the big bottle in the back, but this was sometime back and I couldn't remember who's car it was (don't view the gallery much). What size is the bottle in the boot? 10lb or larger? As you've done this I wouldn't mind chatting to you about it, especially as you know too much about RV8 engines too. :tu I'll send you a PM later this weekend.

Cheers,
Tony B

RE: Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

Tony,
One of the last jobs I did before I sold Pilgrim was to sort out a proper clutch cable. The kit I developed started with a lazer cut lever that replaces the poxy plastic self adjuster in the pedal box. Next was a custom made cable that fitted exactly, worked perfectly, adjusted brilliantly and was made of cable designed for mooring a battleship.

If you’re working with the old arrangement, it might be worth considering an upgrade. Would be cheaper and IMHO better than hydraulic.

Can’t help with NOS, sorry!

RE: Has anyone fitted NOS to the Cobra?

Thanks Den. I already have all the hydraulics for the clutch as I swapped the old SU's & manifold for the setup with a SD1 restorer. The only thing I need to do now is to convert the pedal box to accept the master cylinder. I've thought of doing this myself, having seen a setup similar on a Dax, but may be tempted to let someone else do it for me just to cut out the welding required - I'm not too good at that!

Cheers,
Tony B
