RE: Clutch Parts

Hi there.

I used a Getrag box on my Chevy 350/Dax. It came from a Jag XJ40. Some Getrags come off BMWs. The main difference for our purposes is the number of splines on the gearbox input shaft - this will determine which clutch parts you use. I used a Mopar friction plate on mine whereas I have heard that the BMW boxes allow the use of standard Chevy kit. I used a 168 tooth flywheel, bought from Repower for 90 odd quid I seem to recall. My standard Chevy clutch pressure plate came as part of a kit from Real Steel which included the friction plate and a plastic release/thrust bearing. I sold these two as they were no good to me. I had to buy a Mopar clutch friction plate from Real Steel (quite expensive at £100 I think, par for the course with RS imo) details : McLeod/Mopar 11" 23 spline 260121/D(metric spline.) I used AK Sportscars to modify a metal Chevy thrust bearing, the nose of the input shaft of the gearbox and the pilot bearing. They also provided the adaptor plate. So far the box has been superb, seems to be well up to the torque. My advise is get it rebuilt if you can afford it, and renew the linkages from the base of the gearlever to the selector rod which goes into the 'box itself. I wish I'd done my linkage before installing into the car. If any questions please email me or call on 01189-463263 Ian

RE: Clutch Parts

hi ian
i am also using a getrag from a jag(xjs). Does this mean i can use the chevy pressure plate but have to use the same friction plate that you had to use. i already have the box bolted to the bellhousing via an adapter plate from AK so what do i need to do to the nose of the input shaft. not sure which release bearing to use, is it the Mcleod (by16053) in the real steel catalogue. I believe all they do to modify is weld in a sleeve which fit the input shaft?
Regards graham

RE: Clutch Parts

Hello Graham.

When AK did my adapter kit I left the gearbox and bellhousing with them for a couple of weeks, when I picked it up they had machined the last inch or so of the input shaft so that it would fit inside the pilot bearing (which they had also machined) to match. You may find the work has already been done. I bought my release bearing from Repower, no part number on invoice but it cost £34-00 plus VAT and was all made of steel, described as "GM RELEASE BEARING" (not like some useless plastic ones.) In my experience Repower's pricing is more 'realistic' than RS's, their tel. no. is 01903-522900, contact is Brian. Ken at AK welded a sleeve into it and finished it off so that it was a perfect sliding fit on the Jag gearbox. Check the number of splines on your input shaft. My guess is it will have 23, in a metric pattern (don't know how you check for this bit though.) If so you'll need the McLeod/Mopar 11" friction plate I mentioned above - just dug out my RS invoice, pt # was BY260121. Hope that helps.
Ian ps call me if it would make things easier. - no. above somewhere! ps I just found pt # 16053 in my RS catalogue in the Mopar section - you can use a Chevy bearing. Ask RS or Repower if their clutch kit contains a completely metal bearing (RS pt # BYK5552-05.) If so you'll save some money!!
