ADVICE ON BUYING A COBRA

HI THERE,
I AM NEW TO THIS FORUM BUT A MEMBER OF CRC SINCE FEB 2003
THE BIRDS HAVE FLOWN THE NEST AND SHE WHO MUST BE OBEYED HAS SAID YES. SO AT LONG LAST I AM ABLE TO BUY A COBRA. I WOULD APPRECIATE SOME HELP IN WHAT TO LOOK FOR WHEN I SEE ONE FOR SALE. I WOULD LIKE A DAX OR SIMILAR GOOD BUILD WITH A CHEVEY/FORD V8 ENGINE DEVELOPING AROUND 300BHP. I HAVE A BUDGET OF 20K MAX. I WOULD HAVE LIKED TO HAVE BUILT ONE MYSELF, BUT SPACE AND AGE NO LONGER PERMIT. I KNOW IT HAS TO BE CORRECTLY REGISTERED BUT WHAT SHOULD I LOOK FOR TO ENSURE IT HAS BEEN BUILT PROPERLY. I DO NOT WANT TO SPEND MONTHS PUTTING RIGHT SOMEBODY ELSES FAULTS.
YOUR HELP WOULD BE MUCH APPRECIATED.

CHRIS

RE: ADVICE ON BUYING A COBRA

Hi Chris,

You should be able to tell a good, properly constructed Cobra from one that's been thrown together, It'll be a feeling you get.
The owner should have receipts if he's the builder as well. It'll be cared for inside a cosy garage rather than out in the rain. DON'T buy the first one you look at, look at as many as you can, then decide what's for you (it could be the first one after all) speak to members at your local meet, get some members to give you a ride in their cars, see if there's anyone local who's willing to go with you when you look at a car. Good luck with finding a car, but don't rule out the Rover V8 (says he who's got a ford engine) as it's a damn fine engine and infinitely up-gradeable (although probably a tad dearer on tuning parts)

Simon

Chris, you might find a trip to Hallmark Cars worthwhile if only to get a feel for the different makes and features - you'll also get a good indication of what you can get for your money.

Chris

Hallmark have a collection of nice cars, but be advised that they are buying from private punters and putting on there profit, I know of one particular car that went up £9000 from private sale to Hallmark advert.

RE: ADVICE ON BUYING A COBRA

Chris, welcome as Rodders says, to the Madhouse.
I have been in a similar situation to you before. My advice (for what it's worth) would be this:
Look around for a while, go to Hallmark and Sovereign, see some private cars etc.
Then talk to Dave Brookes. I did, and never regretted it!

Cheers,
Neil.

Ps happy hunting

PPs If you call DB, don't bother talking to Tricky. Monkies and Organ Grinders and all that!{-}

RE: ADVICE ON BUYING A COBRA

Chris,

Just try not to buy the first one you visit - it'll be hard Treat it the same as you would for buying a tintop, if it creaks and groans, has oil seeping out where it shouldn't then walk away, for you level of cash you should get a V nice car.

Rgds
