Cobra Live Axle

Folks
has anyone ever built a Cobra kit with a live axle from something like a Mustang. If you have which kit what are the +'s/-'s is it worth doing ?

RE: Cobra Live Axle

Hi Rover, the reason most of the kits at the moment are live Axle is because that is how the kit manufacturers have developed their kit's. If you are really after a solid rear axle you can now get one with the new Dax De Dion kit that they have brought out as it is the only one that I am aware of that is produced by one of the major kit company's in this country. I think you will find for every day driving the live axle is best the only time the solid one might have a slight advantage is on track day's.

RE: Cobra Live Axle

Rover(?)

All of the UK kits use independant rear suspension (either Jaguar or Granada/Sierra) with the exception of Hawk 289 which uses MGB live axle. There is no advantage in taking the backward step of live axle really, there are no real benefits (ride, handling, unsprung mass all worse with solid) with the possible exception of traction if you looking to build a 1/4 mile car. However, the Mustang axle has alot of advantages over any other live axle because it's inherently strong in 9inch versions, comes in virtually any ratio you could possibly want (although Jag has alot of choice also) and you can get loads of aftermarket shafts, lockers etc to fit it. I believe a few of the American kits use Mustang running gear although they too now use Jag or Mustang independant in the majority.

RE: Cobra Live Axle

Meant to say also, that if you really want a live axle car then Mustang axle would be a great choice, and available narrowed to any width you want from the Street Rod suppliers.

RE: Cobra Live Axle

Thanks for your replies the reason I ask is that I am currently trying to decide on which kit/ direction to go. In my enquiries I have come aross a complete Mustang that could make the route somewhat easier. But I didn't know of a kit within the UK that was suitable.

Hi Rover

Still pondering, I thought I had talked you into choosing an AK at Exeter Show, good luck, which ever you decide on.
