RE: taper drill (HEELLLLPPPP!!!!!!)

Glyn, I have read in "I think it was Bob's Cob build" that he got a 7degree taper drill and found in the end it was a lot easier to use an old track rod end with some grinding paste attached to a drill ,you will have to destroy it first (which is why you use an old one). It didn't take long at all. You will find Bob's Cob build on the left on the home page. Good luck.

HTH

Glyn

The easiest and cheapest option is to use an old sierra track rod end, take it apart and grind the ball down so it will fit in a drill, then use the taper of the track rod end with valve grinding paste to taper the lower mount.

RE: taper drill (HEELLLLPPPP!!!!!!)

Glyn,
I’ll just add that it was me who first suggested the grinding paste idea.

Like you I struggled to find a tapered reamer, so I tried it thinking it would be really difficult. However, to my astonishment the old taper and course paste worked quicker than normal drilling.

So, I put it in the manual. Works exceedingly well.

You can get a taper reamer from a machine tool supplier. They cost roughly £150 + VAT. That’s what I paid for the one that Pilgrim has.

Just one more thought, go easy, as you can open the hole up to much.

Thanks it was you, who gave me the tip in the first place.

RE: taper drill (HEELLLLPPPP!!!!!!)

I just aquired a taper reamer from Cromwell tools in Bedford (01234 341251) for approx £ 35 + VAT. This was for work purposes, ( locating taper pins on machine tool turrets ) Where did you go in order that you had to pay £150 plus?????
Seems awful expensive to me.
Regards,
Ian.

RE: taper drill (HEELLLLPPPP!!!!!!)

Ian,
The Ford taper angle is 7’7” (seven degrees and seven minutes). It’s very unusual and not commonly available. I guess that’s why a reamer with that precise angle is an expensive piece of kit.
