Ive got a stiff one.................

I'm running my cobra rover v8 on semi synthetic gearbox oil like your really supposed to.
I'm also finding that when going slow in traffic my gearbox is really stiff sometimes i cant change gear so turn the engine off and find that i can change gear no prob again. Why am i having this problem supposing that my oil is no problem.what could be the cause of the problem? Going at speed the problem does not exist.

Kev

I've told you what to do, try ATF, but you won't listen to me.

RE: Ive got a stiff one.................

Kev,

Despite what Mike says, filling with ATF will not help. If you are having no problems at higher speeds, as you say, then it's not an oil issue. Thicker oil would slows down the operation of the synchro hubs and so high speed changes should be worse with thicker oil. This is exactly why ATF was specified in the first place but you say you don't have a high speed problem, so it's not the oil.

It is poosible that your clutch is not clearing properly or that you are (not conciously) not fully dpressing it. Try being very deliberate with clutch depression. Does it 'drag' at all when stationary in gear.

Is the problem specific to one or two gears - or is it all of them. Boxes will normally go into 4th (striaght through) even if the rest are knackered. If its a specific pair of gears then you could have selector fork wear, synchro hub wear etc. You wouldn't necessarily notice this at high speed, as the engagement dogs will 'pull' themselves into mesh once the partially engage at high speed.

Is the problem total 'baulking' ie no engagement at all, or is it a parial engagement 'grinding' noise?

Russ
