Magnetic drain plug

Are there any downsides to using a magnetic drain plug?
I've araldited a super strong magnet to mine to pick any nasties up, and when I drained the oil there was a greyish sludge on it. (I'm told this is quite normal for a fresh engine when running in) so if I didn't have a magnetic drain plug, would it get caught by the filter?
Just curious why all engines don't have them as standard

RE: Magnetic drain plug

Not sure there could be any negatives about a magnetic drain plug.
Perhaps not fitted as standard due to cost (although only a small amount)????

RE: Magnetic drain plug

Loadsa cars used to have them....I can`t think of a good reason (apart from cost,as you say) not to have one.
Filter should pick up most of what you`re finding, should be filtering to 10-25 micron? that`s small bits. But catching them with a magnet means seeing what`s coming off your engine......sludge is good, lumps is BAD!!!!!!!
