Should I buy this cobra

Hi guys
I have found a beautiful Dax cobra for sale. Brand new chevy v8, superb finnish and interior. Built 1998. Ex Hallmark car sold a year ago for £26000, now for sale at £20000. Correctly regd as Dax, but, no SVA. What are the pitfalls of buying a car without an SVA? Your opinions on this would help a lot.

RE: Should I buy this cobra

If it should have been SVA tested, then at some point it is likely that the lack of SVA will rear its head. (perhaps at a subsequent MOT)You should first ascertain the correct date of registration, and confirm if it needs SVA.

Some owners on the forum have been succesful with DVLA in claiming that their cars were on the road prior to the test, and that therefore they should have been exempt from SVA, but a 98 build would fall into a catagory of "definately requires a test" I believe

It would be useful to ascertain if things like windscreens, fuel caps, hinges are compliant items, supplied by dax as such and will therefore pass, or if they are non sva compliant items. This will enable you to make a decision on what items may have to be temporarily or permanently changed is a test is required.

RE: Should I buy this cobra

Hi.
If the car is correctly registered. ie. It says Dax on the log book (V5) there is no problem. The only reaon you need an SVA is so that you can get the car registered correctly. This car may have been exempt for some reason or it has been SVA'd.
BTW. Are you aware that once the car has passed its SVA and the SVA (MAC) certificate is handed in at the registration office they do not hand it back, it is kept for their records. You do not need it as you will be issued with a V5 which has the vehicles correct details on it, ie. Dax.

RE: Should I buy this cobra

Dave
am I right in that the SVA test information will be on the log book - especially the bit about which emissions test the car should be subjected to at the next MOT?.

That should easily verify if the car has been SVA'd and correctly registered, or not.

PS congrats on the write up!!

RE: Should I buy this cobra

Hi Steve.
To tell you the truth, i'm not sure.I,m expectinjg a V5 through shortly so i'll take a look at what it says, and if i remember i'll post it here.
I was thinking that because it says Dax on the V5 there shouldn't be a problem.
RE: PS. Cheers.

RE: Should I buy this cobra

Chris,

Go ahead and buy it. If it's correctly registered as a Dax then it's perfectly legal. Cars built before the SVA was introduced do not need to be put through the test if they are registered as what they are (ie a Dax) if they are registered as the donor (ie Jaguar or Daimler) then that's a whole new ball game.

RE: Should I buy this cobra

You are quite right Steve I just checked my V5 for my car first reg Mar 2003 it gives CO percentage 3.50 and HC limit 0.12 [1990 engine].

One point if the car has a new engine then DVLA will be require emmissions regulations to year of engine.

RE: Should I buy this cobra

Hi all,
Ive just checked my V5 and its always bewildered me as to how its worded. Mine says Kit - Made from new Parts Date registered 2002. Nothing is in the CO2 section. Its been given a 1984 plate as the engine was from a 84 rover. Havent had any trouble with the MOT as a mate of mine does it and seems to think that kit cars dont need to have the emissions checked. Aint going to argue with him, but if I took it any where else I might be in for trouble as there is nothing saying the engine is from a 84 car. Also whats to stop me fitting a newer plate?

Philip

If you kept a photocopy of your MAC certificate you have proof on there, mine was a 1972 engine and the MAC has not applicable marked in the CO2 and HC boxes. :tu :tu :tu
