Cam Choice?

What sort of cams are people running?

I had thought about the Edelbrock performer plus but then I looked at the Desktop dyno curve using the Crane energizer 266H10. Less top end BHP but more low down torque and the peak BHP delivered lower in the rev range.

Question?

What would a 302 normally rev to? is 6000rpm too much to have the peak BHP delivered at 6000rpm?

Or would I be better off with a lower BHP at 4500 to 5000rpm max revs? (and the extra torque from 2000 to 3500rpm?

Car is for street use & motorway cruising only at this stage.

Cheers

Andy

RE: Cam Choice?

Andy, I have had the performer plus cam in both my engines and have been very pleased with them. The performer plus doesn't give you as much power but a very very smooth idle. I'm not so keen on a lumpy idle, I like engines to be smooth, thats what the plus does.
Post on the US site, they have more experience of Ford cams.

RE: Cam Choice?

Simon,

What sort of rpm do you consider your limit? Does it naturally tail off above the 5500 limit of the performer kit?

Replies on the US site recommended using a comp cams 268H but as far as I can see thats got very similar characteristics as the perfomer plus!

Have you ever driven in a performer rpm equiped car?

Cheers

RE: Cam Choice?

Andy I run a Oselli 8481 in my RV8 3:9 at present. Hydraulic 42/82/82/42 period 304 deg lift 496" rally; power band between 3,000-7,000 rpm and it makes it!!.

Now building 4:6 lump and going for Crane F 248 48/82/84/46 Solid lifters 11.5;1 CR duration 310 deg, lift 533" Rally, works well with Hollies so the book says Eric .

RE: Cam Choice?

Hi Mike, no nothing wrong with the engine mate, just need a few more horses to keep up with you on my next trip too Devon my luver!!

I have sold it to a colleague who has the Lambo he is fitting it in there as the old 3.5 struggles a bit re the weight of the Lambo (1500 Kl's!)

I have let him have the engine when it comes out at a fraction of the build cost; as he himself is building RV8's as a small side line now, so I can get loads of bits FOC for my 4.6 project regards Eric.
