RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

The colour you are looking for is probably “AC15 Princess Blue”. The colour code is “6191m single stage” according to the I.C.I. formulas. It should be accurate as to hue and chroma as I.C.I. was the supplier to AC cars during that period. The single stage formulas may be reformulated to base/clear but coverage/hiding will not be as effective.

The above information is extracted from information I gathered about original AC colours at the US AC forum at http://www.clubcobra.com.

Se my previous postings at discussion thread http://www.cobraclub.com/forum/AC_General/511.html for more information.

RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

Jordy - I rather suspect there were as many original Shelby shades of blue as there are now opinions about what "Guardsman Blue" really is. As Bowtie says, lots of info on this topic over at clubcobra.

Whatever colour you choose, you can always just say "This IS the ORIGINAL blue as used by Shelby"!!! - and no-one can really contradict you ( unless you happen to be speaking to a real Cobra owner, and they tend to avoid us plastic sh*t box builders).

BTW - nothing bad aboput your english, it's much better than my dutch!! How do you say "Salutations fellow cobra replica builder" in dutch???

RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

hi again Jordy, and Gegroet, mede Cobra replica bouwer right back at you.

if that is old fashioned, what would the contemporary greeting be? (and please don't give me a phrase which really means "your sister's a great bang" or some such!!!

There is no such thing as the perfect replica - they are all different and each one appeals to diffrent people looking for different things. Sorry to hear that it is even more difficult to get a cobra on the road in Holland than I realised. things have toughened up here in the UK with the introduction of the SVA test, but personally I think that has kept some deathtraps off the road. It is true that if you really, really know the system, you can get most things legally on the road in the UK, but if one is serious about the car, then getting seriously into the regulations should be a part of it. Is it so much different in your country?? At one time I heard that LPG converted cars were the way to go, not so now?

ERA, Contemporary, and SPF seem all to be good cars from what I hear, have you been to www.clubcobra.com where there are lots of threads about these? I am not 100% convinced about the overall shape of the SPF, but it sure does look nice. Many £££££'s tho'.

Our modern replicas will easily outhandle an original Cobra - they were real handfulls, espeically the 427 versions (assuming they had 427, not 428 engines). There have been several rip-offs in the USA with replica cars being passed off as originals - more fool the buyers I say, they obviously did not research their subject properly. Even now, because Americans have to "title" (register to you and me) their cars as 1965 AC cobra's to get around emissions regulations, you will see them advertised as such. Let the buyer beware.

Much, much luck in your search for your own "perfect" Cobra - I hope you get one sooner rather than later, with as much BHP as you can manage, because believe me, it is so much fun to see the look on a motor-cyclists face (behind his helmet that is) when you keep up/go past them!! As for Ferraris/Porsches ect - who cares??? They're slow in comparison!!

RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

Hi Wilf!

Ok, let's get into this subject (the SPF look). What makes you think that it's not an exact copy? Not that I disagree, but I can't really find the difference (not that I have much photo's of the original..)! I've been browsing the clubcobra forum but I can't find the related subjects (not that I've been looking very hard hehe).

And yes, they are very strict! And yes, if you know the right way you can pass the test but it's ridiculous how obstinate they are! The cars are just normal replica's with big blocks (not the most extreme version). One of them is tuned for circuit Zandvoort (the good old track!), but hasn't anything special (in relation to the other cars)....Funny thing is that when he drives his beast on the road, a lot of people on the same road are really frightened when he passes haha! You can see them park their cars in the verge (the part next to the road). Bad thing when you have an pace maker.

By the way [what kind of an expression is this anyway??? What is located 'by the way'.....highway? farm? ], you could say "Hallo collega cobra replica bouwer!", which means.....well I guess you can figure it out by your own! It's a bit like the English translation.

Jordy

RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

Haha, somebody I know is gonna to be very pissed when he reads this!

In Dutch it means: "Chevy motoren zijn voor mietjes!" Well, actually wimps=doetjes, but 'mietjes' sounds better :+

Ok, enough said!

Jordy

RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

Although any colour could be an original (as already stated) the blue everyone usually think of was Ford's own Viking Blue (accompanied with the 2 white stripes).

However, don't forget the first Cobra was had about 3 or 4 paint jobs - just to make the auto-press think they had produced more than one!

Hope this helps,

Jon

RE: What is the original blue Cobra color???

Hi Jordy - about the SPF's. I only got to look at one in the flesh for a short while some time ago. I feel that the rear end is extended and "flattened" more than an original. Something about the way the line of the boot lid falls away. No big deal tho', most replicas depart from the original in some way, usually and especially around the door shuts, which are far too wide in most shells. (Not mine tho' - the new Crendon bodyshell gets it all right).
There are a few cars which are very different, mainly down to the use of non-narrowed Jag rear ends etc.
At the end of the day (hate that phrase really), these differences are minor, and only of interest to picky buggers like me. 99.9% of people just say "OOH - just LOOK at that car".

In the USA, the SPF is sold as a roller - i.e. complete except for engine and gearbox - same in Holland?

Now - last translation request I promise - how do you say, in Dutch "Wise man says that Gardner Douglas with engine on bench is worse than 80 yr old man with no viagara"???

cheers

Wilf

Hahaha, what's this?? An automatic translation? You DON'T want to know what this means when I translate it back to English, but I guess the ‘Penis’ part says enough
