Cobra Novice

I have decided today to build a Cobra.x(

It will definitely have a Chevy Lump but I need advice concerning
which Kit Manufacturer is best.I personally like the look of Gardner Douglas.

Obviously it comes down to individual preference but Value for money/
quality is important. I can afford £12- 15K.

Any advice would be much appreciated.

Thanks

PS I live near Tunbridge Wells in Kent

RE: Cobra Novice

David

It had to happen sooner or later.

Watch out for Wilf if you are looking at a Chevy, thats my first bit of advice!!

Secondly, go and visit the manufacturers, have test rides etc, then go and see GD, you will have a better appreciation of the differences.

Regarding cost, a GD can be built for around 12K, look in the owners section as Alistair built a GD with a hardtop for around 12K. His had a Rover lump, but if you don't go for the hardtop then the extra funds would cover a chevy.

Please be aware that which ever replica you go for, throw your budget out of the window after around 12 months, as that is when you see different details on other cars and think that would look nice.

It is the small things that tend to add up.

Anyway, have fun and I look forward to bumping into you at GD in the future.

£12,000 - £15,000 Hmmmm, you are going to have to run a tight ship to pull it in for that much, but as Robert says...it can be done but your car wont have all the fancy bits on that are so popular.
I know where there is a set of MG Metro pepper pots going cheap...should fill the rear arches just nice on a GD!!!!!.

RE: Cobra Novice

David - congratulations on joining the band of the snake-bitten!

I am not going to recommend one kit over any other, all I would say is research the thing properly, and that means going to see all the relevant manufacturers. If you can afford to wait, going to one of the bigger shows (such as Stoneleigh next April??) can help you see the differences between kits, and we are an approachable bunch on the club stand. Only other thing I would say is that at £12-£15k, you could end up with a very basic GD, but a good spec Sumo, for instance. Work out what you really, really want from your car - is it for trackdays/posing/cruising/the looks/originality etc, and then choose your manuacturer to suit. Rob is right about the budget - you would have to be very single minded to stay within your original "guess".
BTW - if you really, really have to get a Chevvy I will still talk to you, just be ready for a few (good natured) digs! In all seriousness, I would recommend a Rover v8 at that budget level - nowt wrong with them, they make the right noises, and still go like stink! Going the US V8 route will push your costs up significantly, unless you can pick up a very cheap engine and box and don't have to spend any pennies reconning them.

Dave - I am beginning to get seriously worried about you. Please carefully read the instructions on your bottle of pills and follow them!

RE: Cobra Novice

Errr, - actually Dave, far as I know all production Cobra roadsters had underslung exhausts, only s/c's and race cars had sidepipes from the factory. My own Crendon s/c has underslung exchausts, it really should have (matt black) sidepipes, which I will get around to fitting one day. I actually prefer the character of the noise from the rear exhaust outlets.

Most kits fit sidepipes because they plain don't have the ground clearance to fit an underslung exhaust, not an issue on the Crendon because of the chassis design, and I guess it must be the same for GD's, sure Rob will correct me if I'm wrong. Spped humps are no problem for me!! On most other kits I've seen, an underslung exhaust would be/is a real pain to fit and maintain any sensible road clearance. BUT.... sidies do look the biz!!

cheers

Wilf
