RE: Fire Extinguisher Systems

As stated at the beginning, at this stage I am only interested in knowing who might be interested. I would much prefer it if you all look into it before going any further,as I will only be the middle man and if you change your minds and want a different system, that will be something you will have to sort out yourself. At this stage I just want to get a rough number to work out what sort of price they will do us.

As none of you seam to be able to do the maths this is roughly how the price will work out. :} :}

List price with vat........5 systems-20%........-10systems-25%........over 10 systems-35%?

FIA001 £217.38...................£173.90................. ...£163.03.....................£141.30
FIA002£351.32 ..................£281.06....................£263. 5......................£228.36
FIA004 £477.64..................£382.11.................. ..£358.23....................£310.47

The FIA001 has a Steel Cylinder weighing about 1.0 Kilo more than the Alley ones but is a lot cheaper.

The systems will need servicing every 2 years at £36.22+vat for the 4.0 Ltr system.

They will do a variety of systems and still give the discount as long as they are a plumed in system, so if you want the 2.25 Ltr system no probs there. If anyone else can get a better price that is fine by me as I want to spend as little as poss, but do want a proper system so I would be only too pleased to let someone else do all the reorganizing :9 :-; .

I have included the web address in the original post so if you have any more questions you will be best off looking there as that would be where I look.

Like I say there is nothing in this for me except a slightly cheaper system just trying to get a good deal :tu :tu

RE: Fire Extinguisher Systems

Martin,
I'd be interested in the manual system.

Good thing about the lock - I'd hate to come back to the car and find it swimming in AFFF shaving foam.

RE: Fire Extinguisher Systems

As a result of the unfortunate (or fortunate to be alive and well, depends which way you look at it) chap who suffered the recent fire, I bought an AFFF 4L mechanical system from SPA Design ( which includes a steel tank, 3 nozzles for cabin and 3 for the engine bay, pipe, connectors and pull cables) a couple of weeks ago for £178.15 inc VAT and delivery. Check out www.spa-uk.co.uk. Haven't fitted it yet, but it looks fine in the box! I have to be honest to say that I don't have ANY idea how good the other systems are but the SPA system is sold by the likes of Merlin M/S and Demon Tweeks. Oh, the alloy systems are a lot more expensive, but this makes little difference (I guess) unless you're fitting it in a race car.

Whatever you fit - its got to me a good idea!

RE: Fire Extinguisher Systems

Tony,
I fitted mine after it was built, the hardest part is finding the room for the extingisher, hence why I said you may want to look at the 2.5L bottle.

RE: Fire Extinguisher Systems

Hi all, just to let you all know a friend of mine is in contact with SPA directly and hopefully we will be getting some prices tomorrow to do a comparison. BUT it will be either one system or the other so if anyone knows anything about either system which could influence the decision apart from the price, please let us know. By the way for people who are thinking of going for the smaller 2.25 Ltr system be aware that you can only have 2 nozzles on that system according to the manufacturer, and bearing in mind that the chap who's car went up in flames recently received burnes to his legs, please bear this in mind if you decide on one of the systems.

RE: Fire Extinguisher Systems

For those that are interested here are the details from SPA, including advice from there Fire expert.Their standard 4 litre systems include 6 nozzles, since this is what is required for racing regs. They supply systems to F1, so I guess they know what they are doing. He does not recommend more than 2 nozzles to go onto a 2.25 litre bottle, and their "complete" 2.25 litre system does only contain 2 nozzles.

There is a "safety" interlock on their system (locking pin), but this is on the handle at the bottle, not on the pull handle for actuation. They don't do an actuation-handle interlock pin.

Their "complete" systems include 4 metres of tubing, 6 AND 12 foot long actuating cables, nozzles etc. The bottle sizes are as follows, all sizes in mm;

4 litre steel - 150dia by 380 long (bottle and handle overall)
4 litre ally - 156dia by 376 long
2.25 litre ally - 156dia by 305 long
2.25 litre ally (slimline) 125dia by 355 long.

Add some for mounting brackets as for the lifeline systems.

Pricing - this is for buying 5 to 10 sets direct from them, manually-activated systems:

MFM400S - steel 4 litre bottle, 6 nozzle system - £157.35
MFM400A - ally 4 litre, 6 nozzle system - £205.05
LWM50 - 2.25 litre ally bottle, 2 nozzle system - £146.79

He recommends 3 nozzles in the engine bay, nozzles to be located as far as possible away from the potential seats of fire (radiator/firewall/up under the wings) as the spray pattern needs distance to develop. Nozzle mounting brackets are NOT included in the kits.
Asked if we felt that fuseboxes should be covered - this guy knows about kitcars!!
He also told me that the Fire Brigade have mentioned that synthetic brake fluid fires are very difficult to put out, as is antifreeze once it is alight. (gulp).
So - a 6 nozzle system could de deployed thus - 3 in engine bay, 1 each footwell, 1 covering fusebox.
Servicing at 2 year intervals, 4 litre refill £34.29, 2.25 litre £28.06.

ALL PRICES MUST HAVE VAT AND CARRIAGE ADDED.

I will not be ordering for another week or so, so for anyone who is defiantly interested either send me a PM or better still Email me at ac_car_tinker@ntlworld.com I will send a PM to anyone who has shown interest before I order anyway but you will need to have found out what system you want.
