I've had experience of the opposite.

I use CO2 to fill mountainbike tyres on the trail. When I look at the bike a few days later the tyre will be flat as the tubes are porous to C02.

Which explains why your tyres go down a bit when you use air, you just get left with the nitrogen.

So... filling up with pure nitrogen makes perfect sense to me (not that I'd bother).
