Electric water pumps

Has anyone used the EWP by Davis Craig? Sold through Demon Tweaks and Think auto?

I like the idea of the pump only running when needed and being able to run on after the engine has been shut down. Also when stopped at lights after a run the pump can go to full chat if the temp rises unlike the mechanical type which needs you to open the throttle.

Any experience? It costs a lot more than a replacement stock pump but given I would also by a a March pully for said pump that can be offset against the cost.

motor life is 20000 hrs continous at 89°C, thats 2.28 years of driving 24 7, should last OK!

On another note customs are now deliberating over my cyclinder heads, Um I wonder how much they are going to charge me!!

Cheers

RE: Electric water pumps

What engine are you putting it on, as it is not suitable for a 350 chevy or larger.

Its going on a warmed 302, Performer heads and intake etc. Comp cams 268H cam.

RE: Electric water pumps

Ive just bought one as a supplementary pump working off a temperature sender in tandem with the original pathetic weedy water pump.

(Original water pump cant move enough volume of water at idle to make a decent flow through the long pipe runs and move the large cold water mass in the radiator. To quote BMW "its not really a pump its more an agitator to help the thermal flow " )

I'll be fitting and testing the electric one at the weekend. I'll let you know how I get on.

Cheers,

Tony

RE: Electric water pumps

Yep, I would agree. They are OK as a secondary pump but I would be very very hesitant to use one as my primary. They claim well, but I have read an interesting article on an LS1 install.

RE: Electric water pumps

Id be interested to read that article, they have fitted one on the fordmuscle.com website to a '67 mustang, so far they report good things, steadier engine temperature and improved throttle response, Ill look out for their update next month.

I know there are two versions of the pump, one can be used as a replacement for the mechanical pump and the other is intended as a backup to the mechanical pump. Im sure the big pump flows better than a mechanical pump, but the proof is in the eating so to speak!

Cheers

Do you have a link to it, or is it not on the web?

RE: Electric water pumps

We fitted the electric water pump at the weekend and it was really quite easy. The pump comes with a relay as does the temperature sending unit ( Total £200 including 2 day delivery from MAWS) so it was a question of chopping out a couple of wires and using just the temperature sender relay.

Did it cure the overheating.....no.........We now think its a second duff thermostat ( and this one is brand new...£48 ouch ).

The good news is that the pump is very quiet, ( quieter than an electric fuel pump), small, unobtrusive, and it does an excellent job of whizzing the water round at 80 ltrs a minute when the mechanical thermostat allows it to, and switching itself off when the engine has cooled down.

Upshot of it all is that we are keeping the pump as fitted as a standby and dumping the thermostat to see if this cures the problem.

Cheers,

Tony

RE: Electric water pumps

I Spoke to MAWS last week and thats exactly how they saud to use it, as a supplemetaty pump not as the main pump. So I think that will be how its going to be done.

Cheers

RE: Electric water pumps

For the record, I have a EWP Davis Craig water pump and the specific electronic controller used on a SBC 350. It worked well and with the controller gives infinite automatic pump speed control and the facility to set the control temperature. No problems in use - mine is a moderate horse power SBC - and was used alone. Great feeling when it runs low, or off, at high speed with plenty of air over the radiator, and then runs high when stopped in traffic in hot weather. A good solution I think.
The whole combination has run only a few hundred miles and due to re-plumbing and other reasons (no problems or dissatisfaction) it is available if anyone wants to make me a sensible offer.
Call me if interested.
